yes it takes quite a bit of effort to turn it, don't worry it won't break. Make sure you push it in enough to flex it a bit. Then give it a good hard turn. I'm pretty sure it was counterclockwise for me but I could be wrong.
WD40 won't help much, it's plastic. (not metal). Once you've done it a few times you get to understand how much effort is required.
Oh and don't use your finger tips to turn it, cup it between your thumb and index finger with both hands, found that worked better.
Had to replace mine a few weeks ago too, also found it very tough at first.

Hi Andy the metal outer doesnt need to move mate! When I changed my orange repeaters to clear mine like yours would only turn slighty! I basically wrapped a thin cloth around my hand and gave it a good tight gribbed turn and off she came! I did notice dirt and grim around the rubber lip of the repeater I removed, I can only assume thats why it was a little tough to remove! Hope this helps not very technical I know

why would you remove the rubber from the back? Are you replacing the bulb or the entire turn signal assembly?

Just undid mine to check for you and the black bublholder is a 45 degree anticlockwise turn. BTW remove to refit unit and bulb should take under 15 seconds
