Windshield Molding / Trim

Has anyone replaced the rubber lining around the windshield as well as the plastic cover at the bottom of the windshield?

Looks like this can be an easy DIY, but wanted to check.

Wow they're pretty bad :scratchhead:

You'd have to take the windscreen out to do it though, wouldn't you?

That's what I was thinking at first, but it looks like it's just wedged in there- there is space on the underside around the glass.

I replaced a couple of windscreens on my cough cough... Fiat Panda :D when I was a young pup, and it was held in by this rubber trim. It looks to me like a similar arrangement on the Z4, does this not held the windscreen in place?

The Z4 will have a bonded windscreen like most if not all cars, I believe the rubber trim is just for asthetics.

Comparing a Z4 to a Fiat Panda :o :poke:

All modern cars have the screen bonded in place, they even add considerably to the structural strength of the car.

Even with the rubber being mainly for asthetics and to act as rain channels, I'd imagine it could be a big pain to get out and replace. A glass replacement guy would have a few tools to help, designed not to scratch the rest of the car during the process.

What kind of weather do you have where you live? Its worrying to see the rubber in such bad condition. I didn't realise there was a rubber strip around the bottom edge :?

Right, so definitely bonded then

I agree, it must be a bit worrying about those seals, they're in terrible condition for 5 years old :scratchhead:

I think it's mostly sun damage. I went ahead and ordered the rubber trim. Looking under the current trim there is a black goo that appears to be a mild adhesive. Any clue what that is so I can purchase that as well?

Pretty bad sun damage, are the other seals the same, if not you should get some rubber lubricant (oooeeeerrrrrr) to stop it happening to them. Not sure what exactly you need to get but someone will know, maybe try the detailing section.

My new molding came in the mail today (top, left, and right side) - removed the old and installed the new. Not a problem at all. The black sticky goo stayed on the car from the old liner, so there was no need to add more goo (whatever the goo was).

brian,

i have the same problem. where/how did you get the part? they told me i would have to take out my windshield out to have it replaced. how hard is the install?

Did you get any goo with the rubber, I have a small section that doesnt stay flush so need a little go to hold down.

i just installed mine today and for some reason the top is not flush towards the middle.... i gave up after about an hour of trying... :(

Sweet I changed mine without any problems, looks much better. no special tools, nothing other than the part itself (single part for top and sides).

I know this is an old post, but I've got exactly the same problem, really would like to know what the part number for just the trim is The Mfg Part# 51317017021 appears to be the channel for the glass too (which I'm trying to avoid having to remove)

Any help would be appreciated.
