Windshield help

Hi all,

Just picked up an 03 Z4 3.0i. The used car dealer I bought it from had a number of things repaired (roof motor, 4 new tires, and windshield were the big ones) before I picked it up. I noticed that the base of the windshield no longer has the stock molding attached properly. It looks to me like the replacement outside plastic molding is the wrong one - it doesn't have the same contour or length as the stock one - like it's a centimeter or two too short (or maybe the windshield is a bit too short?). I've attached photos below to show how the window guy rigged it to try to make it fit (and did a piss poor job at that).

My question for you all is if the plastic base on the bottom attaches to the windshield to form a seal on the outside or if it just sits there overlaying it? (which is how the stock rotted one appeared to me). If anyone could check that on their non-messed Z4, I'd appreciate it! Any other thoughts are welcome, too.

I'm going to call the dealer and have this fixed properly, but just want to actually know what I'm talking about beforehand.

Edit: crap, if this should have gone in the "problems" section, feel free to move it.

Looks like they've done a poor job replacing the windscreen, and have damaged the surround at the top & bottom, and then bodged a repair on the bottom with a bit of tubing.

The top should be like this...

The bottom should look like this...(without the missing/broken piece of course)

The piece you need for the bottom (part 1 - 51717017022 -in the below diagram) is about £90 from a dealer.

That is a total bodge by the dealer, not even used bmw parts. Probably just tat they had lying around.

Thanks for the input, guys. I will definitely be calling the dealer up and getting it taken care of. It's good to know what I'm going in and asking for beforehand.

mmm-five, huge thanks for the photos and part info! That helps a ton.

For what it's worth, here is the top and sides - to me, they look ok.

The bottom is the one that's jacked up - the part he put in was used - it's all faded to light gray and is a little warped (not to mention it doesn't reach the windshield).

Appreciate the help!

holy sheet thats bad.

The sides are wrong too :o

Not meant to be rubber but a black plastic on the sides, that do not go over the side metal.

Got mine changed over the weekend.. and looks good as new... thats appalling.

looks like its been changed in a rush by a complete cowboy as its impossible to cause that type of damage to the bottom plastic if removed correctly. i wouldnt even trust the quality of the seal because of this

Thanks for the input, everyone. The rear defroster also wasn't working. I called the salesman I dealt with at the dealer today and he said no problem; bring it back and he'll take care of it. I'll let you all know the outcome when I get it back.
