Windscreens

Are our cars prone to breaking the screen? This is the 2nd one in a year. No signs of stone chips or anything just a 6" crack

Probably due to being quite low, they seem to get littered with debris.

Mine has a few chips and needs replacing again after a year.

While Z4 bodies are fairly stiff for a roadster, they still flex much more than a typical tin top. That flex will strain the windscreen more, possibly exacerbating any tendency to crack initiated by some minor imperfection.

Weird that there are no chips. Could it have been fitted incorrectly ?

Mine has a number of chips in it and is only a year & a half old - as Ben says, the height of the car is the issue. I have also noticed that stones quite often hit the bonnet so you get a ding on the bonnet and a bonus chip in the windscreen... Whereas on a higher saloon car the front & radiator would swallow most. Doesn't help that with all the rain there is loads of crap on the roads, most of which seems to have come out of the huge number of pot holes opening up :x

I just noticed a long thin scratch on the passenger side of mine - not sure if I crack as the 'nail test' didn't work on the inside...

bummer... no sign of anything and i don't remember a ding either.

ive never had a window go on me and I've had some pretty ropey cars anyway i recon its been 9 or 10 months tops for this screen i would be worried if they flex that much. im putting money on a defect it was a national windscreens job.

at least on the next one ill get a proper bmw rubber seal and give that to them to use
