just driving home from work tonight thought id squirt the windscreen and scrape away the flys only a little trickle coming out of the jets then nothing at all got home checked resevoir is empty. Nothing strange there then but i wasnt warned with a light on the dash checked my manual no mention of a tell tale light on the dash to say your low so i assume z4s dont have this function am i correct in this as my old 330 clubsport had one? As did my previous 6 BMWs

IIRC, after 2006 facelift its to do with if you have headlight washers fitted or not.
On UK models if you have std headlights plus the optional headlight washer pack then you don't have washer fluid warning, if you have xenon lights then you do - apparently its the law that if you have xenon's they must come with a washer system with low level warning system as even the smallest amount of dirt on the lense can corrupt the light pattern and cause dazzling.
