Windscreen Replacement

Dear all found a six inch crack in my screen today. If I get insurance to sort it should I get the original BMW seal myself. Heard autoglass use OEM seals? I have rain sensing wipers, so do they sort the sensor which is bonded to the glass?

Recently had autoglass replace the windscreen on my 2003 e85 not had any problems with it. Hope this helps.

When you speak to Autoglass, ask for OEM screen and rubbers only. They will comply - I had one of those today.

Only OEM BMW glass/rubber.
I let them put in SaintGobain glass and nothing worked then.
Full BMW kit now.

I've had 2 screens in mine, and both were leak & whistle-free. Both were Pilkington though.

First time they re-used the rubbers, 2nd time they replaced them.

I was warned by my insurer that the £70 windscreen excess was only applicable to whichever part the windscreen company could supply, and if I 'demanded' a BMW branded one, then they'd only pay the first £250 towards it.

Don't forget that OEM and OE are not the same thing. OE means genuine BMW, OEM may mean Pilkington, St Gobain, Triplex, or any other of the suppliers are contracted to make BMW screens.

I find the quality of fitting of the screen is more important than the manufacturer of the screen.

How do you guys go about requesting oem stuff?

Last time Autoglass replaced mine (a year ago) I said to them about the oem surround over the phone and the guy said they will just replace it with a pattern part.

Obviously this pattern part split at the edges, which it did on the windscreen replacement before this (I've had 3 new windscreens in 4 years) but I left it as the windscreen got scratched by a stone under my wiper blade.

I'm going to get another windscreen fitted in the spring and obviously I want to try and get them to fit oem gear if I can.

When I spoke to them last week, I asked them for the OEM screen. They said - fine, as long as the insurance company approves.

As the car is only a couple of months old, and has the cameras behind the glass for speed sign readings etc. they approved.

Cameras in the car to read speed signs...Do you have a white stick? :poke:

I was told that if the car is less than 3 years old they fit original parts.

Thanks all for the replies. Apparently its National Windscreens in Sheffield doing the replacement. I am taking the car there next Wednesday so it can be done properly under roof in the dry. I have explained re genuine parts. The guy I spoke with seemed quite knowledgeable and was aware of problems using St Gobain glass with rain sensing wipers.

Also sorting a genuine windscreen gasket/seal.

Would love to known why it suddenly cracked?

Speed sign-reading cameras. Christ i've heard it all now!
i wonder how many design and marketing meetings were conducted in order to green-light the development path for that one?!?
Just out of curiosity pvr, what was the cost for that particular option? *Braces self for buckets of chuckles....*

A little chuckle. 150 sponds wont break the bank i suppose.
Cant help but feel this is just a bit 'surplus to requirement' however.
I think the (guessing) 100's of thousands euros technology development budget would have been better spent on something really worthwhile, like an early warning system for potholes.

Change of temperature could cause a small chip to turn into a huge crack. Makes sense with the cold icy weather recently.

I asked for OEM on mine when I had screen replaced- no hassle and when the fitter came he said he was glad it was OEM as he said pattern parts are a pain to fit and rarely do!
