errr, as the thread title, car been sat in the sun this afternoon, jump in, open the window & bloody hell what a racket!

coincidence that it's been in the sun or is this something inside? tried working it up & down a few times but it was just the same, 20 mins of driving & it cured itself. it pretty much sounded like something was dry rubbing at either side (fore & aft rather than inside & outside of the window) of the glass. it didn't happen until the front edge (closest to the wing mirror) appeared from the door & was in its channel.

glass has expanded a little in the sun & was rubbuing or something else amiss?

any ideas of any greases that may help if/when it comes back?
 
It will be your window regulator,on its way out..a known issue on the z4's,unfortunately,and around £200 ftd from a dealer/per window :thumbsdown:
 
Or you need to clean windows and rubber. I used to get it a lot when i parked under sap producing trees.
 
Mine did exactlry the same thing, after being left in the sun, it was definatley a glass on rubber sound. Cleaned window when I got home, now all is fine.
Why do you guys think it's a window regulator?
How would that make a noise? :?
 
I had a new motor fitted for other reasons still screeches, cleaned the rubber with some window cleaner. Did the trick :thumbsup:

x3, shortly after it went BONK andI was lucky to close the window... fix before too late.

Any grinding noises too?
 
I am having the same problem if the car is left in the sun for long periods of time very annoying. Is there nothing that can be done to the regulator to stop it ?? I had to change one on a previous car and it was a very frustrating job.
 
Just thought I'd add a bit of an update to this I decided to take a look at mine when I got home from work.

Unfortunately I was unable to fully remove the door card due to not having the correct torx crewdriver you need a T25 school boy error I know :headbang:

Any way I found my passenger side door card was poorly fitted and had clearly been off before so I don't know if that's part of the problem. I will be stripping the door down as soon as I can to see if there is anything I can do to help the situation. I need to do this on the drivers side as well as the window does not seem to seal as well as passenger one so will check that one out as well. It probably is the regulator but you never know I may find something that can help others in this position so if I find any thing I will post it up.
 
Rubber on dry glass screech is very different sound than failing regulator grind, but I wouldn't know how to spell either. You shouldn't do a repair based on a recommendation from someone who has not actually heard the sound, without corroborating evidence.
 
It's definetly a rubber on glass sound on mine more then a grinding sound but still want to take a look to see if I can figure out what's going on.

i'd say it's almost certainly a rubber on glass sound-definatly not a grinding noise, i'll try cleaning the next time it happens but it was very hot up here in cumbria over the weekend but it didn't do it again-still hot so i'll check later...

by the way on the window regulator, the auto-drop stopped working last week so i did a window reset & it started working again. yesterday it stopped working again so yet another reset it's working again.... related?? :?
 
Possibly related, if the rubber drags enough to cause excess current draw from the motor, the controller thinks there's an obstruction and disables the auto window movements.
