The wind deflector does reduce the buffeting, though not as much as the mesh one used to on my Z3. I also like them for that more enclosed feel it gives the cabin. :)

buy a coupe

On an e89, with the top up, that's exactly what we have :D plus the option to go Roadster!

I actually think the E89 looks better with the roof up......

One of the reasons I like mine in black is because unless you're on top of it, you can't see the seams to even know its a drop top... black rubber/black paint.

You can get the BMW wind deflector for an e89 as a retrofit kit. It is in the accessory brochure.

Part Number 54 34 7 200 808 MSRP is £274.00 Fitting required and not included in price.

The kit includes the deflector, screens for inside the rollover bars and the hardware.

You also need new rollover bar covers. (just the back side covers) 51 43 9 128 411 and 51 43 9 128 412

I found the instructions. Looks easy to do.

Instructions --> http://pages.bangor.ac.uk/~pss826/E89WindDeflectorInstallation.pdf

I had it retro fitted last march and including labour the price rocketed to £457.63 :-(

Luckily, comes as standard on the E85 Alpina. Did one trip without one, totally different - and not in a good way. If the E89 is anyway similar, I'd definitely recommend getting one.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I've got a question. I recently bought a wind deflector off eBay (£145 plus £15 P&P), but then realised that it was only the centre section and not the two headrest inserts as well. I'm going to buy the rollover hoop covers from BMW for £70 for the pair. Feeling slightly ripped off now by the eBay seller but I suppose its my own fault. Are the headrest mesh inserts 100% neccessary? The same eBay seller wants £125 for them, which I'm not prepared to pay, but he's the only person I can find who sells them. From looking at it, the seat headrests seem to cover up the hoops quite well so I can't imagine too much air flow being directed through them. What do you guys think?

they do come with coat hooks :D

although never used the coat hooks :x

as I am quite tall my seats are well back so doubt that i get loads of benifit from them, prob not £125 anyways. You do have to take the headrests apart to insert them as well.

If you were of a mind you may be able to make something and trap it in the headrests but that up to you

take one apart and get the pattern

al the best

Mine are mesh, with coat hooks, but have a perspex cover on them, so are a complete block whereas the main deflector is mesh only, so allows some air through.

I suppose you *could* use clear perspex in the roll hoops if you don't have the mesh inserts?

EDITED: adding caveat: I am talking about the E85 here, not E89. Not sure which one the question is aimed at, if its E89 then all the above may be ignored at your discretion :) )

Finally removed mine from the boot lid and installed it for the first time at the weekend, and it does indeed make a big difference

i'd be more concerened about bird shitting inside it

Bird actually did shat on the drivers seat of my old Street Ka when I left the top down on my drive once. Have never any car alone with the roof down since. Not nice trying to pick bits of it out of the little holes in your leather seats!

I have a great pic from my 3rd zd where a crow sitting on a tree overhanging a country road must have had a bet with a hedge hog. I bet I can crap on the next topless car.
It was perfectly timed to hit as I was doing 50mph just below the passenger head rest. If the wife was sitting in the car it would have been at mouth position, and it exploded everywhere even into the footwell. I can not dream of the amount of biz that could be produced by one bird and how far it managed to travel inside all 4 walls of the car. If the wife was in the car I would have bet it would be the last she ever went in the car with the top down. So stationary or at motion beware of birds, I will upload the image.

I would not pay for wind deflector but if its free it does make a difference, zd1 did not have one, zd2 and zd3 did zd4 not but zd 5 does. I think the new zd has less wind turb.

The issue is that the mesh type do need to be removed as they darken rear view so in the old z getting it from the boot and messing is a bit of a pain and sometimes not worth it. The new zd it folds in half and I stow in the net or behind the seat and can be removed or installed quick so is currently on.
