I was correct as to what the previous owner told me. I took the wheel off today and it is definitely a 9.5" and not as you suggest a 10".

I visited a BMW specialist & they confirmed it is the tyre which is at fault (still a 265) but inferior. They suggested also the eagle F1 265/30 but suggested not to go 275/30 even though it may be ok.

wouldn't go for 275 tho, I have 265 and that's just perfect

Off topic, but those running wider than a 225/255 section tyre front/back respectively, has it really made that much of a difference to grip with a larger contact patch?
