why the fixation on numbers ?

I'm guilty too... but why do forum denizens, not only here but every forum I've looked at, insist on calling cars by obscure factory numbers ?? E36,37,46, 86, 87, 89 92 WTF Christ! it took me forever to figure out BMW numbers and I'm only sure of a couple... some forums are even worse... I believe I may have a 997.2 or, is it ?? :? :? WTF is with the decimal places, it's confusing enough
What's wrong with model and year of production , eh ??? :D

and why do m3 people call M3 convertibles "Verts" ? Is it a "younger" thing? either that or they can't spell Cabriolet... :P

Happy Christmas everyone...

It's just shorthand - every hobby/interest has it's acronyms and codes.

When you're talking to people who know what you mean, using the production codes is easier and faster than spelling out the exact model e.g. it's much faster to say I've got an F20 118d Sport than I've got a 2012-model-year 5-door 1 series 118d Sport

2012 model is then a post October 2011 car , being pedantic here :D

See, textual descriptions can be confusing even when trying to explain why the model codes are easier... QED

Hence it's easier to say F20 or F21 - no confusion with the E81, E82, E87 or E88

No its just easier... because there are 2 models of Z4s so calling them by their numbers is less confusing

Your 911 might be a 911 but the 997.2 is very different to the 997.1

aah, but what year is it ? the reg system in the UK is bizarre (different to say the least :) )

cars depreciate based on age .... if I said I had a 986 porsche with 84k on it you can't tell if its a 2000 or a 2002.
I had an E46 M3 Cab.....what year and motor was in it ?
but if I said an '05 M3 Cab you know how old and what projected normal mileage would be plus you know that over here it had a 333hp engine.
everything has its pro's and cons

I don't mind the number fixation that much, it's just a PITA trying to learn it... :D
