Why do people still write checks?

I still write checks myself. But they're at home and they're used to pay the bills via mail. However, I do not understand how people still write checks in a retail enviroment. Especially, when there's a really long line. An then they write really slow. Ok fine, maybe they're used to writing checks all their life...

But for the love of GOD. Write your damn phone number and driver's license number on the check before you leave the dang house! When have they ever written a check and NOT have to put that info down? Some check companies should really print out "retail ready" checks.

So please tell me you guys use your debit card or cash. Actually, it's very rare that I see men do this. It's typically a woman, but I believe that's due in part that it's easier for them to carry a checkbook in their purse.

Same here, still write checks but from home to pay bills. When i'm hitting the stores I usually pay with my credit card, trying to earn some points to get a free ipod. :D

I don't shop, but when I'm out of beer and toilet paper and forced to go to the store, I use my debit card so I can get the hell out of there as quickly as possible...God I hate shopping :|

I only use cash or debit card when shopping and when I am elected
or appointed dictator the express lane will be limited to 10 items
and cash or debit/credit card only. Violator will be dealt with severely.... :chophead:

We have [some] cash only checkouts here, saves waiting for some idiot writing a cheque or forgot their PIN

I usuall hang out in Nordstrums to shop for clothes and mostly to check out the talent. I see cheques being written and figure these idiots don't realize it is the 21st century yet.

Lets see the last check I wrote was when I was paying off the closing costs an escrow for this condo. So generally for sums over $600 I will write a check, but that much is probably going to just a bank. Hell I don't even have an idea where my checkbook is right now. I'm sure the damn thing isn't current.

and how about the people who write a cheque - then get their debit card out as a guarantee - cant they just use the card :headbang:

:soapbox:
The occasions I dread are the miscreants that don't even pull out the checkbook until the cashier has rung up all of their stuff. Then they take forever to write it and balance their checkbook before they tear the check out. Then they don't pull out any ID until the cashier demands it.

And yes I have had the above scenario play out at a grocery store when I was in a hurry - and in the express line at that. :headbang:
