WHY DID YOU CHOSE YOUR E89?

This follows on from the "Area Under the Graph" thread which was in range of being hi-jacked by others including me.

So, this one tries to establish why we bought our particular variation of E89. In this, I am thinking the variables you thought through when making the choice, such as price, performance, mpg, handling, style, interior, engine type, ability to modify, etc. We could also set out why we chose an E89 over an alternative from another manufacturer. I imagine that this will show we all attacked it from completely different angles and that is why we have such interesting discussions......

Anyway, I chose ours in 2017 because I saw one in Spain in Valencia Orange and thought "Oh no, I have an itch". Consequently, with it needing to be scratched, I started trawling Autotrader. There was never any competition from other makes. Audi TTs are dreadfully dull to look at, and Boxsters are so terribly common and can be ruinous to own. They do drive brilliantly though. There isn't anything else. E89s are a work of art though and the quality shines through for me - I couldn't care less if it didn't handle. I love "iconic' engines and the BMW straight six is one of those, so it had to be that. The 23i was too little and, while I did look at 30i/35i/35iS, none of the 35s came up that met my needs/budget.

A drive in a 30i indicated that is was pleasant enough. I bought an Auto but would have been equally happy with a manual. It's just that an Auto was there with my name on it. Interestingly though, I do have really different driving styles when in an Auto or a Manual. So, it might be that if I had bought a manual I would have driven it harder. As for now, I slush about, but for me that is what the E89 is all about. Wafting effortlessly!

I didn't even contemplate a 20i (as I don't do mods) nor the 28i because it wasn't a six-pot (even if it might perform as well or better).

It did have to look right though so it had to be a colour spec that worked for us. There aren't many choices are there - at least for the 30i. I could have accepted Space Grey with Red or Walnut. Or Titanium silver with Red. Or Blue with White. Or White with Red. (this could be another thread but probably already done many years ago).

In the end, we went for a Dulux White MSport Highline (it had to be a MSport as I preferred the bumpers, wheels and trim bits) with Red and most of the trimmings. Completely standard except a stubby (I use a car cover not because I have an allegiance to the stubby brigade), and 35iS grey grills and lower intakes (to pretend it is a 35iS!). Not really, the exhausts tend to give it away....as does that fact it says 30i on the side.

In sum then, for me, I bought the Z4 because of its style, hard-top roof, perceived quality, lovely creamy engine, right specification, and good value for a low miles six year old car.

What's yours?

Wanted a 2 seater with 300hp, no slushbox and 5 cylinders as a bare minimum.

I ruled out anything from Mercedes as they all have hateful slushboxes, the 370Z was tempting but I couldn't see past the looks and interior.

That narrowed it down to a Porsche Boxster/Cayman S, Audi TTRS and the Z4 35i. The 35i won because the Porsche cars that were in budget had chocolate engines (IMS and bore scoring) and the TTRS felt underwhelming.

If I had to pick one deciding factor it was the roof.
I regularly go to Brittany where we have a bolthole - sometimes for extended periods. Always nice to be there with a convertible when the weather is good but when I'm there the car becomes my 'daily' and years of driving a Z3 when the rain had set in ...especially as the Z3 got older & leakier made me hanker for something more sophisticated without giving up the top-down experience.

Of course coming from a Z3 as well as driving other BMWs as dailys for many years added a bit of brand bias.
I was happy enough with the performance of a 20i automatic when I got it. it was already way quicker than the ageing Z3 and I chose my own particular example more on age, condition & mileage than other factors. To be quite honest Sapphire black with black leather wasn't a combo that was high on my wishlist but it's grown on me....a PITA to keep clean though!

It was only on joining this forum that I learned of the significant gains to be had with a remap . Added very much as an 'afterthought', it has brought a smile to my face and i think its been well worth doing but it had nothing to do with how I chose the car.

My first 35is was bought new in 2015, black sapphire with Kansa red interior for the looks, interior, engine. After a couple of years though the weight transfer ‘slosh’ when pushing on in bends meant it had to go for a replacement Boxy. I’ve since had two more but these were only ever temporary stand ins. Being honest I kinda wish I hadn’t sold the black new one. Even though they don’t handle all that well I still think they’re an awesome car, and road presence is still fantastic.

"awesome road presence" - agree entirely. I don't know if we have a photo of ours on here so here is ours.

I bought my 30i for the following in no particular order:

Great looks inside and out
Reasonable running costs and reliability
Creamy smooth great sounding engine
Great value compared to the competition
Brand knowledge / experience having had countless BMWs since 1995
The metal folding roof - refined practical and good security

I didn't go looking for a black one but it came up with the right spec and importantly the red interior. Black was probably my last colour choice but now I've got it I think it looks amazing especially with the red and makes car look classy and aggressive at the same time, luckily it doesn't rain much here so keeping it clean is relatively simple especially with the ceramic coating.

My first was a 23i, loved the car, driveable as hell on the dartmoor roads, had it mapped to get a better torque delivery and loved it.
HOWEVER (there is always a however) I went to look at some new build houses with a view to adding to my rental porfolio and during the trip there saw my current car 'Scarlet' Carmine red 35i parked on a driveway outside a beautiful house with 'FOR SALE" on her.
I stopped, met Nick the owner, drove the car looked through the history, called BMW to check it out and 20 min later I drove her away, fully loaded, 24k miles £13k, returning the next day on the train to collect my 23i. Yes, I am a tad impulsive.
Shes been tweaked, engine, brakes, suspension etc (NO BLOODY STUBBY or DEBADGING :poke: )
Its been love ever since :D :D

I like sports cars & convertibles, no kids, and partner has a diesel hatchback for using on long trips and sorting the allotment etc.

I decided on the E89 as I like the looks, the hardtop (it's my daily driver), they were falling into my budget, and as I'm in my 30's now I wanted something more grown up. There weren't really any competitors; any Porsche I could afford would either be too old or pauper spec, and I associate Mercedes' offerings as being for the ladies. Other cars I'd like to have owned are now poor value for money due to being collectors items or too much hassle to maintain due to their age (R33 GTR, Impreza P1 etc).

I usually go for cars that are a bit different, so when looking I was only interested in the 35is. The power was also a draw of course.

As for the car I actually bought, I did make some compromises. I'd originally thought I wanted it in yellow/orange, but decided against this mainly due to the fact I park on the road and didn't want a tw@t magnet. I also couldn't be @rsed to keep looking for years until the right colour/spec/price came up for sale, and so I ended up buying a 2010 instead of an LCI model.
I wanted some 'modern' toys so it had to have iDrive, parking sensors, and heated seats. The dimming mirrors and memory seats were just a bonus. I would've liked comfort access but it seems to be a rare option which is a shame. At the time I wasn't seriously looking, but went to view a Deep Sea Blue model I'd seen advertised at a decent price & mileage 2hrs down the M5 and just bought it.

I have to say I was hesitant at first whether it was the right car for me due to the auto box, electric steering, fly-by-wire throttle, and reviews of the M sport suspension & 19" run flats but after a test drive all my fears were allayed.

I'll keep for a few years but next on the cards is likely to be an Elise 111R or V8 F-Type.

I was thinking it was time to give up the motorbikes due to a deterioration in health and wanted a 2 seater convertible as it's the next best thing to a bike. We had a Z3 a few years ago but wanted something that was a bit quicker and handled better.
Started off looking at Audi TT's. Didn't want a diesel and couldn't afford the TTS so was looking at 2wd 2 litres and was going to get it mapped.

Couldn't find one I liked that had necessary touches like heated seats, colour combo and auto box. I like the DSG box but they all seemed to attract a premium.
Whilst browsing Autotrader one day I saw an ad for my Z4. Looked gorgeous in Valencia Orange but with a gloss black roof. Never seen one before. Showed wife thinking she would hate it - she loved it - showed her the seats which I was convinced she wouldn't like as they are a tad retro........ And that was that. She really likes the fact the combo is so rare. That was much more important than size of engine or power output. I needed an auto and the dealer was willing to take my bike in part ex and gave me a decent price.
We agreed a price to change, I rode the bike up to St Albans and drove the Beemer back, roof down all the way to Torquay.

Bonus was heated steering wheel as well as the heated seats which were a must. Had it 3 days and got it remapped. Now, with a fruitier sounding exhaust it's pretty much done.

And I've bought another bike after all 😘

2010 E89 had the following things going for it.
Hardtop convertible
Heated seats
Famously reliable N52 6 pot
Gray over blk interior
Reasonable miles & price
Good looks

My first convertible top in many years. :driving:

I wasn’t in the market for a Z4, or any other car for that matter. I was happy with the few cars that I currently had.

I was taking my daughter to a birthday party and drove past a local garage that sells all sorts of performance cars. Parked up on the front of the forecourt was a Black E89 Z4, and instantly it caught my eye. I dropped my daughter off at her party and immediately drove back to take a closer look.

There was something about this car that really caught my attention, and a strange feeling of she needed to me mine. I hadn’t even sat in her let alone drive her at this stage.

Chatting to the salesman, he informed me that it had only gone up for sale today and the owner had part exchanged it against a Porsche 911. Their intentions where to send it to auction, but thought they would give it a try on the forecourt first.

I was handed the keys and told to take her for a drive. They even put £20 of fuel in it so I could give it a proper test drive.

After 10 minutes I was in love. The car wasn’t perfect. It pulled due to crap tyres, it rattled everywhere and it wasn’t quick at all, but there was still something special about the car. She had a soul, and I had an immediate connection with her.

I returned back from the test drive, and my face must have confirmed the sale. I managed to get £1100 off the asking price and signed the paperwork there and then.

A week later after the pdi, service and mot had been completed I took delivery. THE MRS HIT THE ROOF!! I forget to mention the small detail that I had brought another car. Still she got over it, well that’s what I am telling myself anyway

Now I have addressed them rattles, the crap tyres, the poor performance was dealt with via a remap, and I have spend many many hours correcting the paintwork, I can’t help but finding myself looking my at her all the time.
Yes I wish it sounded better ( that 6 pot sound is missing ) but it is an enjoyable experience every time I drive her. It’s not the best handling car I have ever owned, and it will a certainly the most impractical car I have come across, but there is something obsessive about the E89. I think she willl be here to stay for sometime. :D

Just retired and wanted a really fun impractical car. Started looking for a Cayman, but in my price range they were around 2004 vintage. I really didn't want to spend $20K plus on a 2004 vintage car. Then I seen the E89 and though it was much more attractive than the Cayman. And I was lucky and found exactly the car I wanted. At this pint the only other car I would consider trading my E89 for is a Alfa Romeo 4C. Even more impractical then the E89.

As usual I'll make mine a long story! :tumbleweed:

Had many saloons/coupes..string of Audi Quattros/TD Volvos/TR7s/Rover 220 Turbo etc etc, never been a fan of BMWs, had many very fast and not so fast bikes, latterly into some lovely modern twin engined aircraft, then had three possibly life changing medical events, intersecting unbelievable s**t in my business life, allied to loss of my beloved dog and my mother who I was, latterly very close to and had cared for for the last 3-4 years..all in about 18 months..so decided complete life change..work wise/location etc

Wife suggested 'a hobby' as I hadn't had 'a hobby' for about 10 years..she suggested maybe an old TR7, do it up etc..banned me from having any more bikes..other drivers, hurts more when you are older etc.

Snag was no garage at new location so doing lots of fettling a no no in the Scottish Borders in the winter..or even in the summer!

So mind wandered around..after many bikes (30 odd) fancied the concept of open top motoring..no more leathers/crash helmet etc

Old boss had an immaculate Z3, but I felt like Big Ears in a Noddie car..

Looked at Beetle convertibles/Jag XK drophead /Audi TT Roadster..then saw an E85 in blue with grey interior..lovely looking but just too small /cramped for my well nourished Telly Tubby frame plus ageing tech..

Pondered more..re-looked at the XK but wife collapsed laughing at my suggestion of a Smoking Carriage, plus a big bit for the smaller roads around here..pity..

Then I saw a dealer with a black E89 35is, manual box, red interior. Went for a drive, liked the ride/space, didn't like the nose heavy / remote feel plus the imminent feeling of being planed in a hedge if you provoked it mid corner..

Pondered more..then the epiphany..an Atacama Yellow 30i in Auto Trader..pondered about the price, came back to offer a little less, already sold. Starting doing a lot more research on Atacama Yellow E89s. Climbed most of teh learning curve on BMW options so could understand those..new Z4s were now Valencia Orange so couldn't buy new..read two ot three very positive US articles on the replacemnt of the 30i with the 28i, heard how easy it was to get a re-map..so broadened my search to all Atacama Yellow E89s.

Mine came up at a BMW main dealer, almost all the toys fitted, the highly desirable (according to the then folklore 326m wheels) so decided that was for me.

It was in good-ish condition, drove it home without a proper test drive..car was tramlining horribly on its run-flats, an unhappy marriage with the MSport springs and still that remote feeling (for me) about that lovely bonnet wayyy out in front with some wheels out there somewhere.

Got it home and noticed what I incorrectly diagnosed as 326m wheel cracking..it wasn't..it was a kerbed dent, but I was a newbie..then discovered the Z4 Forum and the path to true enlightment..so the modding began..ordered some Team Dynamics 17" wheels which took months to arrive..had a trip to Skye coming up so bought Greg 81 's 103 Daisy's with some cheap used Chinese tyres simply to get to Skye in the car.

The car was transformed! If some old 103s with cheap Chinese rubber could make such a change then what else could I do..as a hobby..so a Celtic re-map with its attendant weird BHP/Torque curve arrived, that made a big, if now slighly strange difference giving it a bit more split personality, LCI side repeaters gave it more style etc etc ..

So for me it was colour, interior , toys, shape (bottom was nowhere as cute as an E85) , tin top, the feel, the autobox and the fact that you could modify and get palpable improvements.

After getting over the run-flat/19" wheels the only was was up..as I said elsewhere a few months later an Atacama Yellow 35is with most toys and one owner, low mileage came up, I trotted down to see it with cash in my hand, was just going to take it, he insisted I went for a test drive, I just didn't like it enough, sure it was a bit quicker but that was it..the much discussed 6 pot sound passed my by, the car didn't feel any smoother than my balanced shafted 4 potter driving through that fabulous ZF 8 speed box.

It handled in comparsion, having now climbed a long learning curve on reading the car sitting at the back over the wheels rather than in the middle quite lardy and was whispering to me.."go on, provoke me and you'll see what happens", as to the existings car "that was fun, shall we do another turn"..

So that's my journey..I really love my car in a way I've only really loved 2 or 3 inanimate objects in my life, I get so much joy from just seeing its cheeky, non threatening form, the suggestion of just dropping the top down and going to the shops for a load/mild cause you can!

I feel if I now sold it, it would be an act of gross betrayal..we've done about 20,000 miles together, a lot poodling around, quite a bit of serious hooning, apart from a Formite's M2 which kept getting away from me (and most others) on an NC500 run, I've never felt it was underpowered..defintely a bit weird with the Celtic map with the strange rush at the top end..it just made me use Sport /Manual mode when the pace hotted up..mostly from those pesky 3 litre E85s that seem to go round corners like go-karts.

I've always felt it could be trusted, done some big mileages in appalling conditions at high speeds with great confidence, apart from one puncture never came close to letting me down..

So an awful lot of pleasure and joy..for by new car/aviation standards peanuts

Had Capris for over 30 years but due to various personal reasons, sold them up.
Missed having a weekend toy in the garage and had been instantly taken with the Z4 E89 shape. Maybe with the hard roof it harks back to the Capris a little??
Did loads of thinking, researching, scribbling and decided a 20i was the one that suited me. Went on the BMW website and discovered Valencia Orange. I'm not one for boring coloured cars and this hit the spot for me.
A search on the Approved Used website showed three available. Two autos, no thanks. The only manual one was in Tring, about 5 miles from RAF Halton where my lad was doing his basic training. We were due to visit him that weekend, an omen obviously. Took him to view the car. Came back on the train the following week and brought it home. Just over a year old with the rest of a 5 year maintenance package on it, one owner and 14k on the clock. Never once looked back or regretted anything. Still love it as much as I did 4 years ago.
Due to house moves, having a daily, covid etc I have only put 10k on it in those 4 years. I promised myself last week that it would start to get more use! Let's see how that goes then

After owning a 3.0si for the best part of 3 years & liking the car very much i decided it was becoming a bit long in the tooth and found a mint M-sport 30i with only 19k miles and the same great n52 engine as my previous car.
All was well until one month into ownership when it sh*t itself and i ended up getting my money back from the backstreet dealers after a hilariously funny moment when he asked if I’d be willing to pay for the replacement gearbox
I fancied a change after that so looked at the 20i range, good on fuel & cheap to tax/service what they could do after a software upgrade made my mind up.
3 years later it’s been completely fault free (apart from the customary cracked 326 wheels, naturally) & still makes me smile, whistling when it spools up between corners the rich low to midrange torque is perfect for the nadgery local lanes around Smartbear Towers :driving:

Comments like PBondar's first make me wonder if the previous owner did any work on the handling of my car. I'm coming from a 2010 NC Miata, and have driven a Boxter S and had a ride-along in a Lotus Elise at an autocross event. I know what good handling feels like. I bloody love my 2016 Z4. I mean its a heavy-ish car, but I feel like it can take more lateral Gs than my Miata with upgraded tires could. I really do not get the "Z4 is bad for handling" comments.

Again, maybe I just got lucky and have some upgrades I dont know about, but... otherwise y'all are crazy.

I should add, to be in the spirit of this thread, I have wanted a Z4 for a LONG time. I am in love with 2-seat roadsters. I have owned an MG Midget, MG B, Miata, and now Z4. You could say I have a style. I have the MG B, Miata, and Zed all in my possession right now. However the Miata is going to be sold soon. That day will be painful, haha. I've had her for about a decade now.

The Miata always handled lovely. But I craved more power. This led me to the Z4 (along with its ***STUNNING*** looks). I also craved more creature comforts as these are all daily drivers (different points in time obviously). Well we are 2 for 2 now.

I decided on the 35i mainly because I couldnt afford a decent 35is... lol. Also, using the same engine and transmission I figured there was more room for upgrades on the i. Not to mention the 35is is even harder to find in a color I liked than the i. I just couldnt do Black, white, silver, etc. Had to have the orange or blue. Well I found the blue about 6 hours away. I got lucky, though. They had stock image up of a black car, but I noted that the text said blue. Knew that model year only had my beloved Estoril so I called them. A dodge ram dealer had taken it in trade, just got it, and didnt know what they had. I got it for wholesale price (and I believe that... I would have paid $5k more and been happy with the deal).

So yeah. Threw on a JB4 w/ MHD back-end flash, and a DCI. Nothing else (yet) but some very minor cosmetics. Looking at what needs to be upgraded for reliability next like chargepipe. But thats the story of why I bought my Zed.

I had a weird mix of cars growing up, couple of imps, the ubiquitous capri (loved that motor) TR7, Jag XJ6 4.2, fiat x/19, Mondeo, Escorts, MGZT and regularly driving an X3, I started a new job which meant that I didn't have to use public transport and my car would be a mobile office. I loved going without the roof but wanted more reliability, so looked at the holy trinity (Z4, SLK and TT) as well as a crossfire (bloody awful and that was before I read the reviews).

Looked at porsche, but my local indy said with my budget (£15k) I'd just be buying trouble, mx5 seemed too "common" and a bit feeble power wise and the 350z that I saw looked as though they'd all be tampered with by people who consider the 'fast & furious' as guidelines for vehicle modifications.

First z4 I found was just within budget, so took a drive to the dealer (around 20 miles away) started it and like others have noticed, I just connected with it during the test drive, so I sorted the paperwork on the spot. It's a 2.0 so when post covid funds permit, it'll be remapped and those godawful Bridgestone RFTs will be binned.

It's one of those cars, that I keep looking back at and enjoy polishing (it got that a lot during lock down)

The car was stock, save a piece of botched wiring for a speed camera detector..it had an ingrained film of Manchester city grime which was the only other addition!

The combination of msport springs/dampers/19" wheels/run flats just simply didn't work..

The bum over the rear wheels /long bonnet took me about a year to fully acclimatise, I was recovering from a vestibular impairment issue allied to some eye related matters so that probably didn't help.

Having had 4 Audi Quattros which exhibit unparalled balance and controllablity it took a bit of re-calibration to get the front light Z4 hooning nicely in my hands..

I've done a myriad of incremental handling mods..each having a noticeable and positive impact..in order..

new 17" alloys, Conti Sports Contacts, Bilstein B8s, QH&R ARBs, Quaife LSD, E9 M3 steering /suspension linkage components..

The handling is as good as I need it to be, under all circumstances, plus comfort levels are pretty good!
