Problem is though the way the weather can be i.e. topsy turvey give it a week and we can go from relatively mild to freezing. I would never have expected the 6" of snow we had middle of March last year.
I don't like any rear wheel drive car in the slippy stuff without winters on.
On ages ago - no tread on my summer rears, so they'll stay on until I can get my mitts on srhutch's 224s and shod the rears with some new hoon-ready summer rubber
Certainly do use them. I managed to get a set of nearly new BMW supplied Winter alloys and tyres for £495 on Ebay from a chap who had just changed from a Z4 to a TTrs ( mad fool!)
They have been on since mid Nov and will be removed around the beginning of March - At that price they virtually pay for themselves as they are saving wear on summer rubber and free me from the anxiety of hoping the snow doesnt come down when I'm stuck at work.
Downsides
They create a touch more road noise
In the mild temperatures we've had so far this winter they dont offer quite as much grip
I'm more reluctant to give it some with them on as they are a soft compound and so will wear quicker - dont want to find myself with no tread left if the snow does come down!
I have winter wheels on since october now (original BMW, 17" 276 alloys with 225 Blizzak LM-25 RFT tires). Loud, unfomfortable, heavy wear due to soft rubber and with a speed limit of 240 km/h.
I wish I had postponed the wheel change till snow comes.
Yes, studded tyres on. I live in Stockholm, Sweden and there is often slippery roads here and usually quite lot of snow. Winter tyres are needed by law from 1st of December to 31st of Mars here.
If you've got the space it's definitely well worth buying a second set of alloys so that you can swap around depending on the weather as it is so unpredictable here. Think it was last year when we suddenly had a really cold snap in April after weeks of much warmer weather. It's a bit of a pain, but nothing in comparison to damaging the car.
