I have worked in the oil field, all my life ....... started offshore when I was 22 ....... turned 61 this year.
Cheap petrol is great, but it means that drilling offshore has pretty much come to a standstill ........
....... and I was just informed that I am being laid off with a 6 month lay off period......

Not really a big deal, figured I would just go do something else hahahahahaha right .......
who knew, at 61 I am apparently old and pretty much unemployable ....... :rofl: came as a bit of a shock I have to tell you.
seems like the only options are to start my own business which to be honest is a real pain in the arse.

Of course no drilling means it will not be long before there is a shortage of oil, which means lolololol 5 pound a litre, bring it on :rofl:

I'm 57yo and being transferred under TUPE for the 6th time in 25 years next month.
Fortunate that I'm not having to seek employment at my age as I'd probably be in the same boat as you.

my father had a similar experience - when he was 'only' 50... took a graduate position in the end doing what he did when he graduated - loved it.

good luck with whatever you end up doing.
 
Sorry to hear that you are being laid off. If you want to or need to work I can see that it will be stressful for you just now. However, like me, you have plenty to keep you occupied, you will soon look back and wonder why you didn't retire at 55!!
 
Interesting hmmmmmmmmmmm I have been asked to phone in tomorrow for a "telephone Interview" ...... same company, same job

Unfortunately I suffer from severe cabin fever ..... lol .... if I am not going somewhere, within a week I am climbing the walls ......
I need to inject Technical challenges into my veins evey day :rofl:

Life doesn't stop when you retire :lol: You get to choose to do whatever you want, go wherever you want, when you want - it's great :thumbsup: The front of my Zed is absolutely peppered from road rash - don't care, infact I'm quite proud of it's condition it shows how much it get's used.

I've got a mate who builds all sorts of stuff now he's retired - like you he's never happy unless he's faced with a technical challenge - the things he's designed and built are amazing. Not my thing but keeps him from climbing the walls too :D

firstly it was on the telephone hmmmmmmmm
secondly, all the people present on the conference knew me and have done for 10 years plus ......
everyone behaved as if I was brand new .......
then they explained that the job, working in Denmark for a Danish entity ..... would be a UK tax paying position ??????
which in my thinking is nothing short of a tax scam - and completely illegal

so basically bollox ........ hahahahaha ......... get laid off, then interviewed back for the same job on basically 50% pay

I'm thinking of running a string of girls ..... or something similar lololol

Well ...... the way I'm really thinking .......

Average cost of a North Sea exploration well can be between 50 and 100 million US Dollars ........
and it doesn't matter how many fancy tools you have, to drill a directional well ( and they are all directional ) somebody has to do it and take the responsibility.
Somebody who knows what they are doing can easily cut 10 million USD off the cost (or more), somebody who doesn't can easily double the cost.
Its one of the few jobs in the world where experience is everything, bullshitters last about 2 weeks.

When activity drops off, folk like me are excess to requirements, when it gets busy ....... lol, attitudes change.

Shell has spent the last 20 years and millions of Dollars trying to develop software/automated drilling rigs that would replace people ..... they are still nowhere near getting there lol
 
I retired at 60 and have the best job ever but with the worst salary !
I used to enjoy my job playing with big boys toys but I wouldn't go back.
