White/Clear Headlight Indicator - DIY

After many failed attempts to buy clear headlights, i've decided to have a go at casting my own clear indicator lenses. Does any body have any spare orange boomerangs which you have lying around? I need a few to make the moulds.

If I can get the castings to work, i'd be happy to make a batch to sell on here, however there might be a lot of trial and error to get them right first.

Great idea and woudl have a ready market. I thought about this years back when I chopped up and made a few sets, of getting a HK/China company to cast me a batch. Doubt they'd have been too interested in ownership rights, etc. Never got time to do it.

What would you cast them in to be UV tolerant, heat tolerant, etc.
 
This would still require you to cut two sets of headlights up though, wouldn't it?

As per cj's comment. Think you would have a load of buyers on here if you were going to do it!

Excellent way to save needing a second pair of lights!

I guess you would still need a set of donar lights for the lens, however clear lights are bocomming more rare, and the price is only going one way. At least with a supply of clear lenses, you would only need to find a cheap amber light as a donar.

Cj10jeeper, Good Question! For the materials i'll be looking into a PMMA (acrylic) or Perspex cast, both of which are available in UV and Heat resistant versions. I need to do a lot more research into this first though, which should be a lot easier once i've got my hands on some lenses!

I thought someone had successfully cut open their existing headlights and reused/resealed them without the need for a second set? Can't find the link at the moment so perhaps my memory's not what it should be, but I'm sure someone's done this.

I'd be interested in a set of clear boomerangs if I was able to cut open and reuse my existing lights...
 
I was planning to do this a while back. But never had any orange bits to play with. And found some cheap clear lenses. Finding a cast big enough to fit the lenses in, ain't easy either. but good luck and you will have plenty of orders if you get it right.

T2ffn - if you have a dremel and a bit (lot) of patience you only need the 1 set of lights. You can cut along the lense / black plastic edge to open them and seal with silicone or similar to fit them back together.

I always though you may as well open up your own lights and insert the clear hockey sticks and reseal original lights if updating this way. And if you had a set of clears, then the only reason to open em up would ve been if you wanted to upgrade clear halogens to xenon.

Or am I being a numpty??

Nah, not a numpty! I think it was people fitting "angel eyes" (LED rings) to their existing headlights that used this method :)
 
Never paid that much attention, but I did not think you can insert Xenon in a Halogen casing as the glass at the front would be different for the beam.
 
Do the light 'shells' open easily enough?

When I fitted angel eyes on my e46, I had to remove the whole light unit (which took AGES), unscrew all the parts, and use a hairdryer to warm + soften the adhesive.

The latter stage was easy if anyone is scared - you don't need to put the units in the oven!
