so sunday i was going to twickenham to watch the mighty mighty england play.

i thought ill take the Z, as it was there and id give it a shake down. im not the main driver my daughter is.

blast up the M3, M25 A30 a good 45miles got it into 6th a fair part of the way and it was flying. found the clutch heavy at low speeds but i drive an auto so could be it. idle is still a bit lumpy even after plugs, oil, coolant, and a gasket or 2.

quoite impressed for an older car, other than a shout of "Oi Ken, does barbie know you got her car"

and the game was ok too........

I've had a few jealous comments in my years of driving my Z4. Almost always said by older blokes driving some old banger or a family wagon.

Yes mate, my 'fancy' drop top costs much less than your financed family car, that your wife forced you to buy

It does make me laugh. I even get a few comments in work from colleagues. Not bothered really, these days it's merely a means of getting my from home to work and it does a perfectly good job of that. It also sounds good, goes well for an old 3 litre and has the benefit of a folding roof

I'm thick skinned...... Lol

I enjoyed it, other than using the clutch as I drive a auto. It compares to a jag XKR I had a few yrs back.

I picked up a m8 to go to the game at Twickenham and he wanted the roof off, 30 seconds leter it's raining......... The joy of UK weather and rag tops eh.

I wondered what I was going to be reading when I saw the title!

Good to hear you enjoyed the drive though - maybe you'll be borrowing it a bit more? :driving:

I get this as well. I turn up in my 25k car and on one bats an eyelid. I turn up in my 4k zed and everyone calls it a flash car. Perspective nothing more.

The e85 looks good as it hasn't aged badly.

That and most owners take care of them so they look clean and that makes them look newer.

Also because it's so different and getting rarer compared to the standard rep mobile 3 series, white goods Audi or small cars that all look the same it gets noticed more.

When asked about running costs, servicing and maintenance etc. most people are surprised at how cheap a 3.0si is to run.

A guy at work has spent more on a more recent reg VW Golf in the past year than I've spent on the Z4 in 5 years. Another has a 320d that thought he had a fast car. Others have hybrids or low emission wheeze boxes. All on a personal lease thing of course!

The E85 is no supercar but it has somewhat of a supercar presence because it's so polarizing to see out and about. Chris Bangle's design REALLY shines more in 2020 than in 2003. It was detested in 2003 but now it's praised for looking so nice.

Also, if you look at the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ or the Toyota Supra--they have some lines reminiscent of the E85. Especially the rear haunches.

I love being in a convoy of Zeds when out on a drive, they do look a bit special when you see a line of them driving along.
I have had a few nice remarks about the car and a few jealous knob head remarks too

The MK1 E85 (03-05) is in the Practical classics price guide, so now recognised as a classic
