whining noise...

...and no its not from a SWMBO that I didn't know about hidden in the car...!

Noticed over the last month a speed related, fairly high pitched noise coming from what I think is the front right area which gets louder the faster the road speed (independent of engine/transmission speed). Strangely it seems worse on some days more than others and can't seem to identify what makes it worse/better.

could it be the wheel bearing? if so is this something that if I took it to the garage they could look at and say yes it is or not it isn't?!

Wheel bearings can be easily checked by jacking the car up at the appropriate corner and taking hold of the wheel (steering locked) at 0 degrees and 180 degrees before checking for play in the bearing. Obviously if you feel movement it could be the bearing as with the weight of the car on it it will be much worse. Normally, wheel bearings make a constant drone noise at speed when they get bad and eventually a drumming/drone when they get really bad! If you do feel move ment check that the ball joints aren't worn as some play will come from lower arm joints/bushes etc.

Other than that is could be stone trapped between your pad and disk or a pad dragging possibly. Without hearing it its hard to tell but its a reasonable place to start looking for the problem. I hope you find it. :)

thanks for advice chris53z4, think I will book it into the garage to have it looked at.

I've noticed a similar noise over the past couple of weeks - seems to disappear at high speeds (or maybe just drowned out by the mighty 4-pot roar!)

I actually had it last year before the Islay trip and by the time I got back it had disappeared so never bothered pursuing it. Let me know what you find out!

Certain tyres can cause strange speed related whining noises, wear, inflation and road surface all being factors. Once stretch of the M5 near Exeter used to be famous for producing horrendous bearing like noises and there was always someone at the side of the road checking their car. I changed a pair of Avons on a previous car which cured the problem, nothing wrong with them but the part worn tread pattern was just resonating at motorway speed.

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Best to check all wheels as the direction of the noise can often be misleading :headbang:

I went out this am to jack up car to try and test...then I realised I didn't have a jack :headbang:

I also ( well my car) experience a whinning noise that appears at 60 mph. It seems that it is road dependent ( I have excluded diff etc). It is sometimes really loud and it is really irritating for a piccky person like me. I have visited an indy and a dealer I trust and both of them suggested tires. :(

Not heard that one before! Thankfully got a great bunch of anaesthetists that I'm working with at the moment so I don't think they've heard it either.

I can picture the scene... You standing by the car saying "Nurse, hand me the jack... Nurse! The Jack! NURSE??"

Oh no, I forgot, you're an anaesthetist - you'd be sitting in the car reading the paper whilst a surgeon fixed it :poke: :poke:

The problem I have is that I need to use a scissor jack to raise the car enough to get a trolley jack underneath to raise the car enough to get axle stands underneath to keep the car raised enough to get me underneath it :D

Brilliant!

When we were medical students my friend was getting changed in to the scrubs and started chatting to the doctor next to him.
"You're an anesthetist aren't you?"

"Yes, how did you guess?"

"Well, I've not seen many surgeons take a newspaper in to theatre in the past!"

He's an ortho trainee now...

Excellent! Clearly a wise and astute chap!

 all right your two :P

let it not be forgotten that anaesthesia is all about keeping the patient alive while the surgeon is trying to kill them :poke:
