agreed! I am starting to have impure thoughts about the Maser to potentially replace my Z4MC when I will find it too difficult to get in or out

Nothing Badge or Bling about the R8. Just a well engineered sports car and just about the only Audi worth sitting inside IMHO. No quicker than many a well driven Zed mind.
The badge was Re the AM (kudos of the brand means more to some than the actual car ) , the bling Re the R8 ( bit shouty for a northern lad still working on building sites  ) & your tongue is well in the cheek i guess with the last bit :D
Not as tounge in cheek as you might think. The R8 V8 manual spider, is a very good sports car not a super car, realy not much quicker than an ///MR. :D

And the V10 is double+ the budget we are talking about

I've kept a V8 R8 honest at the Ring in my Z4MC, and even got a thumbs up from him as we drew level on the final straight :driving:

Was surprised to see him in a race suit, gloves & helmet though :o

Ive spent time out on the fells & country roads both following & driving a Audi TTRS tweaked & mapped at 430 , , can only assume the R8 would drive similar if a little heavier :? & sorry to say but its leagues ahead of a MR or my 35i (mapped 370 ) in terms of torque , grip , was almost embarrassing the competency & sheer grip the Audi had in & out of bends , ruthless was the only word i could come up with after being gapped time after time .
The major downside to them (fast VAGs) was the total lack of feel & interaction you get as driver , WoWed by its capabilities then realise there was little thrill gained from it , just far too competent

Considering the V8 has almost 100bhp & 50lbft more, and 4wd, it's only a couple of tenths faster to 60mph, so something isn't hooked up properly :P

No turbos either, so maybe the manual is crap?

I genuinely have no idea on the R8 stats but the TTRs ive driven was 430bhp with 700Nm torque ( 2.5 turbo) , lighter too than the ZMR & 35i along with mag ride & quattro so no real surprise it would out perform , a very potent tool well capable of sub 4 second 0-60 without the driver requiring the skills of Stig  just a shame after driving it a few times i knew it wasn't something that interested me as a weekend car

have to disagree with you there.
i have gone back to a manual on my current z, but having driven the cayman r the box is awesome and barring having a clutch pedal , is as involving as you want it to be and very slick.

No bother chap - horses for courses, but for me the auto box removes a layer of interaction and the need for proper driver forethought in terms of gear selection and heel and toe and managing a car into and out of a corner - all of which certainly makes for a faster machine point to point but means the speed is more effortless and less engaging and focusing as a result. Plus from an (I know I know) investment perspective, a manual Cayman R in a world of modern turbocharged automatics is going to hold its value comparatively better than a pdk-equipped car.

Each to their own of course though and certainly one wouldn't feel short changed in pdk-equipped car! :driving:

Evidently the TT RS tweaked, is also much quicker than an V8 R8. :) Doesn't make the R8 any quicker. Of the three, the R8 is actually my favourite, but not for 40k

That is in no uncertain terms a truly gorgeous car  it unticks so many of my boxes but i bet once driven that would be easily forgotten
I'm away in France right now so plenty of study & pondering time  decided i'm going to run the Si E86 until such time i get a urge to replace it

Andy, the 987 Spyder for £35kish feels like a special weekend car to my eye....very rare and a good drivers car.

So guess what :D deposit paid last week , collecting Z4 no14  a 35is tomorrow :driving: :P
Unbelievably close to a deal on this 56 plate 89k C4s 997 http://911uk.com/ads_item.php?id=8868 ( he will sell at £19k with fresh MOT if anyone interested )
Anyone looking for a sub 90k sub £20k 997 Carrera now is plum time for buyers , of the 3 possible cars i delved deep into none had seen any interest in 3- 6 months on sale
So a plethora of factors led me back to my favoured jalopy  & i'm happy with my decision .
The only other real contender was a 981 Cayman but i just couldn't get my head round a £26k/£28k car sat in garage 6 days a week while i drive around all week in a £4k Astravan :D
A Audi TTrs also appealed greatly but after a good drive out realised they are so accomplished in every department behind the wheel i felt almost redundant to the cars needs :( 2.5 T these are unbelievably quick cars  tweaked at 430bhp with quattro & weighing less than a ZMR these will roast most cars point to point below hyper class .
So i'm sat here with my train ticket waiting for the morning

Bloody Hell no 14! You've had more zeds than most BMW specialists! :poke:  I know they say never look back but is there any you regret selling?
As for the original topic for me it would have to be a 981 Boxster S which would definitely require the top end of the budget. I'd love a GTS but I'd need an extra £20k on the budget for that. I guess I could be tempted by a late 987 Boxster S with the DFI engine but again its a lot of cash. I dont think I'd go back to the earlier 987/997S because of the engine issues etc.

Mack, the deeper I studied & delved into anything pre 981 the more reticent I was at committing.
"IF" you get lucky Re major fails in ownership there is no amount of small stuff to keep on top of & then you are left holding the shitty football when you want rid.
Yes lots like them., yes lots want them but reality is unless you get below the current cheapest car available you are in for a long hike to get rid.
As for regrets on letting past Zs go?
Not really no., 2 of my favourite ones went to forum guys so I was able to keep touch (until the 35i was trashed :()
Heard a lot of talk on how good the DCT is & generally how better a 35is over a 35i  Well forming a valid opinion you need to know both cars well so I'm very much looking forward to that

I know what you mean anything pre 981 does scare me a bit. Especially when my last 987 gave me enough minor issues. All suspension/steering related, pasm shocks, control arms and steering arms, fortunately all were covered under warranty at the time. But it was only a 20K car when I got rid, hate to think what it might of needed/cost by 80K.

It will be interesting to here your 35i vs 35is thoughts. I have to admit I'm usually put off autos due to loving the manual box's extra involvement. However I'm probably more worried about the horrendous cost when they go wrong and your the one footing the bill.
