what sort of jag?
X_Type is 5x108 isn't it?
mostly what i see on ebay are 115/85/R18 (which is a close match - about 2.5% out)

are XJS, XJ6, XJ12, XK8 all 5x120.65 and is that close enough to fit?
 
Yeah it was from XJ8, so 5x120 and a 74mm centre bore. Fits fine, and i would never go over 40 with it anyway. And yes its an 18" one, which is actually bigger than my std wheels, but marginally. I got it fr £30 delivered, and 17" E46 ones are at least double that or more.
 
Well I think I've done enough research on this now and heard enough opinions. It looks like this to me:
  • - Bridgestone runflats are not particularly nice or fun tyres and are twice the price of most.
    - If you get a puncture, you can't go far on it and have to replace the tyre anyway.
    - If you use normal tyres and carry a space saver, when you use the space saver it's like being on the punctured runflat - you have to stay slow and can't go far because the space saver's tyre will need replacing after under 100 miles.
As I use my boot quite a bit I'm going to get Falken 452s (cheapest I've found are on Camskill.co.uk) and keep 2 tins of Tyre Weld and a pump in the boot. There seems to be uncertainty regarding whether you can have a tyre repaired after using Tyre Weld but even so, it's no real loss if you have to replace the tyre because you'd have had to replace a runflat otherwise, at twice the price.

If anyone can pick holes in my thinking, let me know because I've got a few months before I need tyres.

Thats what i do, bar on long journeys as i said, take a spare spacesaver just in case.

You wont go wrong with Falkens IMO. And my tyre weld kit from Conti (ebay focus ST tyre repair kit, as they are std in them!) fits in the battery bit too! And its a very good pump! Normally they are crap

Just checked one out on ebay £37 all-in. Do you rate that stuff better than Tyre Weld? Do you know if a tyre can be used again after using it? Apparently the tyre places just don't like all the cleaning out of the tyre. Depending on the age of the tyre you could offer the sullen school leaver doing the job £20 in his pocket for doing it.

Im sure tyre weld is fine, but no compressor, plus you can check your tyres with this too. Its so good you dont need another pump! Well i have not bothered :) Easy to use, and lots of uses.

Not sure if you can clean it out, but bet you could. All depends on where the puncture is though.
 
Just ditched my 225/45 17" Bridgestone RFTs and fitted Falken 452, what a revelation :D Although they are not run in yet the reduction in tramlining on the motorway or crossing white lines, and improved steering 'feel' was INSTANT. The suspension is now working WITH the tyres, I'm hanging on to my fillings and I think they are a bit quieter. At £330 fitted with four-wheel alignment it's a cheap 'upgrade' in my eyes - oh, I got a big can of Holts tyre Weld for the boot just in case!

I Could not be more pleased so a big thanks to those that recommended the Falkens :thumbsup:
 
Got my 4 Falkens fitted - is this a record pit stop time... 20 hours from taking the car in with my tyres to getting it back?

They fitted the tyres, taking 2 hours to do it. Then, when I watched the guy torque up the last wheel bolt he stopped and looked confused. He went round the car looking at the tyres then told me they'd put the rear tyres onto the front wheels and front tyres on the rear wheels and would need to take everything off and start again. Had to walk home and go back the next day.

Still, the tramlining has gone and hitting a bump or pothole has been softened from a hammer blow to rubber mallet blow - so to speak.

Sorry but...... :lol: :lol:

If they are incompetant enough to do that i would triple check to make sure they havent damaged your wheels also!
