Which Service ?

I'm unsure on the next service with split opinion of oil service and inspection 2 from several garages, my car has done 34500 miles and due a service in 900 miles, the dash is saying inspection, should this be the big one, car has been serviced as follows:-

- Running in at 1365 miles on June 06
- Oil Service at 7630 miles on June 07
- Inspection 1 at 14087 on Dec 08
- Oil Service at 24656 on May 11

Any advice would be appreciated.
 
Your next service would be inspection 2 so go for that.

Yes it is the big one, so budget about £500 ish from an Indy and £900 ish from a main dealer.
 
I looks like it had it first oil change early, other than that inspection 2 seems right now. Everything will be due around 7K earlier from now on.

No problem. Best to use someone who knows these engines, so look for someone who is good with Z4m/E46 M3/CSL and try and get the valve tolerance report if possible to see what shims were required, if any.

Mine is due in about 3.5k too, so will have to go through this soon too.

Hi Steve, looks like you should have had an oil change in December 10, failing that May 13 following oil/ brake fluids every 2 years regardless of mileage?

Either way I'd have ins 2 done now :thumbsup:
 
Yes will do, only had the car from october.

Looking at using either Brystones or Iridium in Southampton.

Pleased with the car, as reported sometimes get the hesitation on the pickup, hopefully the service will sort out. :thumbsup:

£900, hmm - Is your car an ///M per chance? , I paid £369 for an Insp II (non- ///M car, as per my sig) from Ridgeway BMW Bournemouth, I called into the service dept & enquired about fixed prices for slightly older cars, the manager produced an official BMW flyer relating to E46/39/60 & 61 cars & said that as an E85 Z is based upon the E46 platform he'd honour the E46 prices, as a yardstick an indy quoted me £290 but I personally felt the extra £79 was worth the dealer stamp, which I intend to keep going until the car is around 10 years old.

'List' prices for a dealer I2 hit about £1300, but you should be able to get it down to £800-£900 with some negotiation, and especially if you're willing to travel.

Be careful if you go somewhere that seem really cheap, as some (independents & dealers) have been known to quote low prices and then claim extra for doing the clearances.

ALWAYS ask for the before & after clearance measurements when you drop the car off the afternoon before the inspection.

Bartley In Southampton have a good reputation I believe and offer fixed prices.
 
Go on maindealerdiscount.com most delaers will price match this site i have found or get close.

I am due an Inspection II in about 2k miles and have been quoted £750 from a mian dealer or they will match the cheapest price on that site :)

Why does leaving the car for a day give a correct measurement? I thought it was so it was stone cold so they could work on it easier?

I cant believe they measure to the tolerance that heat expansion can make?

Heat effects the clearance.... Absolutely nothing to do with them wanting to work on a cold car....
Clearances must be checked on a stone cold motor otherwise they clerance procedure is pointless, if your dealer/tune isn't doing it stone cold their most likely not doing it all..
