Hi all,

After a few sherberts I thinking about what I want next (about a years time). I currently have the E86 3.0si. I do 6000 miles a year, no commuting - mainly weekend use and bi annual trips upto scotland.

The 35i will probably be too expensive even in a years time so I have discounted that already.

As above, which one would you choose and why? I think this is a real tough one!

Trade on my 35i with 22K miles, and on a March 10 plate, with every option incl DCT and Nav, but no TV...

if i had to choose between the 2 then i would go for the M coupe, that will be a better collectors car

Just checked the AUC website 35i for £25k!! :driving:
 
It's a peculiar question ... they are very different cars ... with very different personalities. The main thing they have in common is that they are both made by BMW ... but I think you could find other cars ... by other manufacturers ... like a Merc SLK ... that are closer to an E89 than an E86.

The E89 has no rarity, is more of a tourer, softer, less aggro ... and it does the roof thing. I do like the dual clutch gearbox thingie ... but I think that only comes on the s35i model anyway.
The E86 is purer, rarer, wilder, more extreeem. I can't ever see myself buying a car on which the roof comes off ... I don't like the added noise, I think the mechanics are prone to cause problems (leaks and rattles), I don't like the extra weight involved (a bit like carting an extra person and a kid around, every time you go out) ... but some people like the wind in their hair!! So ... it's a personality question. Not really a car question.
 
If you upgrade to an M coupe, apart from the performance increase and the more responsive handling you will basically have the same car. If you get the 30i you get a brand new car, which is slightly softer, is a convertible but there is no performance upgrade.

Perhaps if you wait a little longer and then get the 35i with the DCT it answers both questions.
 
E89 sDriver30i :thumbsup: . Although the performance are very similar between E89 and your current Z4C, the interior and the handling characteristic are very different.

But if you just want more power, then Z4MC is the choice.

Given your usage patterns, I'd say the E89 would be a good fit for you since it's more of a grand tourer. You make no mention of track days or spirited driving where the E86 would have the edge.
 
Both are glorious cars but as stated earlier you've not stated any real need for "aggressive" driving so I’d go E89. E89 35i would probably give you the best of both worlds :driving: within reason :)
 
The MC is a classic and more hardcore but, the running costs are a bit rich - mpg - tax - servicing - ins etc. My heart would say M but the 3.0 E89 is a really nice car and in the real world would probs give you 8/10ths of the M (without the revs). MCs are right nice though.... on reflection, not very helpful this.... sorry
