As above where have all you people who change their own oil buy their housing cap removal tool?

On a similar topic, how do those people with the non-dipstick type engines i.e. N52 3.0si measure the quantity of oil when filling from empty? I mean do you just use the oil level indicator as a electronic dipstick? thanks

I have the Halfords chain that goes on the ratchet. Works perfect.

I don't think you will find it accurate enough, you can only used measured quantities against the specification I would say.

When removing the housing, you know how much oil it needs as per the manual. Just put that in.

sr hutch and pvr; so you guys are saying pour in the 6.5litres stated in the manual and it should come up to the equivlent maximum mark of a dipstick say? are yous speaking from experience or hypothesizing?

From years of doing it. To be fair, if the manual states 6.5 litres I put in 6.2 and check before putting in more.

I have not done the M, but I know for that engine you have to under fill it (ie. not to the max).

Yea thats the way I was intending to do it and checking using the electronic dipstick. But was a bit wary from srhutch's comment above. Thanks.

Just to be different, I changed the oil on my ford ka (yes, i know, but it was cheap to insure, its long gone now) a few times and always removed the old one oil filter by hammering a screwdriver through it and using that as a handle.

I even had the chain/ratchet thing, but found the hammer/screwdriver easier.

Yep this is the way I usually end up doing it. Just make sure you put the screwdriver in below the pick up tube though.

Actually, I did the wifes Fiesta recently and for the first time in 33 years I unscrewed the oil filter by hand. It was last serviced by my local BMW independent garage 12 months ago. I'd like to know their secret.
