When to replace clutch and cost?

Going to close on a 2004 z4 w 72k miles and 6M transmission in a couple days.. have some questions:

-How often do clutches on z4's need to be replaced? (# of years or # of miles)
Is there a routine interval to change it, or is it just by "feel"?

-how much does it cost to replace the clutch?

-is clutch a wear and tear item and under what circumstances would BMW replace it under warranty (i have extended through mid next year)

I'm just a *bit* concerned because I am a new stick driver so I will probably wear the clutch at an accelerated rate for a month or two before starting to drive smoothly.

thoughts and feedback MUCH appreciated!

mine had a new clutch at 3.5 years old and 35k. had a few owners before me though so Ive no idea how it was driven before me.

AUC warranty covered the cost for me...

I always assume a clutch will last 60-90k, but you never get clutch posts on here so I'd say that was a good indication.

Clutches are completely subject to the people using them, so its not unheard of for them to last an age, or go quite quickly.

My clutch 'feel' changes all the time, sometimes judders, sometimes is smooth and normal. This usually indicates to me that a clutch is on the way out, and at 35K miles, I strongly suspect this due to some nob that owned the car before not being able to drive! Clutches are completely subject to the people using them, so its not unheard of for them to last an age, or go quite quickly. As I suspect mine is on the way out, I'll let you know what I'm stung for when its replaced (which will likely be by the stealer as I've an insured warranty that explicitly requires me to use BMW approved garages)...

Sounds similar to mine when I suspected it. Was rapidly approaching the end of the AUC warranty so got it in quick sharp and they investigated and replaced.

As you say completely down to the way people drive 'em.

Odd, I asked a simailr question today.

Mines on 72k now, clutch seems fine but you never know I guess. I believe the Z4 is generally not the easiest car to make a smooth pull away in, my mates seemed a bit jerky and so does mine. (his was new).

Well I tried the AUC approach before it expired. They said they'd charge for taking it apart if nothing wrong, which was hundreds of pounds, so I skipped it figuring it could last years before I have to replace it... a risk you take or price u pay really. Its a car, they all need clutches from time to time.
