Wheel Torque

95 lb-ft or 130 nm is the recommended setting according to my dealer...
95 is too high. (Over torque can be bad too)
I believe Yal has the spec #

Does that differ according to if you have an M or not?
I used 120 nm on my 2.2, but my dealer used 130 nm on the M

FWIW...This was posted by Tirerack on another forum.

Since this comes up frequently, here is the sticky post:
BMW has upped wheel torque specs for all BMWs (except X5s) to 87 lb ft., +/- 7.
Next time you swap wheels or if installing new ones, follow this BMW spec.

Well,

On the way home from work, I stopped at one of our local BMW dealers and talked to a tech.

According to them, the spec for the Z4 (in fact, most BMW's) is 85ft/lbs. +/- 5.

When you take a vehicle into them for service, they torque the wheels down th 80. That's their way....

I know on my truck, it's 100 +/- 5.

I just received my BMW Maintenance manual in the mail today.

The "book" says:

Types Thread Measure
All M12 120 n/m. Converted to US: 88.5 ft/lbs

Others E53, E65 M14 140 n/m. Converted to US: 103.2 ft/lbs.
E66, E67
E83

whether you go with 85 lbs or 100 lbs or anything in between shouldn't effect performance or safety can it?

i used to torque to 85 under normal conditions and then up it to 100 on track days just for that extra sense of security. :D

i know it shouldn't make any difference, but it's a stupid mental insurance thing to allow me to go harder in the corners :driving:

One thing to keep in mind.... wheel torque isn't a one time thing.
They should be re-torqued after ~50 miles.
The wheels need to seat themselves.

My personal SOP is:
Install & torque @ 80ftlb
Put on 20 to 50 miles & re-torque @ 85ftlb.

When tracking... I re-torque before every session,

People use torque wrenches? Guess we can't all be gifted with calibrated elbows. Oh and ya'll quit using ft lbs. It confuses me. Us USAF Jet Engine fellas usually use Inch lbs.

and the stuff that I used to build for the navy and airforce was in inch ounces. If there's a spec, I use a wrench. Don't ask me about the calibration of said wrench...
