Wheel removal-

Hi all, trying to remove my wheels to paint calipers, but other than wellying the back of the wheel to get it off are there any other tips i could try?-thanks

Leave one bolt in party undone at the top and hit the inside of the tyre with a heavy mallet, sledgehammer, etc. A gentle tap is all it needs.

Failing that loosen all four bolts slightly and lower the car onto the wheel. That will crack it.If not drive it forward 6" gently Then raise and remove wheel.

Would be interested to know if whacking the wheel works. I could not remove my front wheel and didn't fancy hitting it really hard in case I damaged something.
I was told that my wheel probably does not come off easily because "Coppaslip" was not used between the wheel and hub when it was last removed?
p.s. Nearly bought a 32oz rubber mallet - which apparently is used by Tyre fitters - but figured I would do more harm than good. :o

To be clear hit the inner edge of the tyre NOT the rim. A hit with a heavy hammer is nothing compared to the treatment the tyre gets on a potholed road.

They all stick over time unless you use one of the thin surface protectors like pvr uses.

if worried use a length of timber to cover wheel then hit with a hammer,it will come off :D put timber along bottom of course :driving:

I tend to find a couple of kicks to the tyre will loses most stuck wheels... just make sure you have axle stands and a very good jack under the car... the last thing you want is it all crashing down.

Oh dear i can see this ending badly for andysat :poke:

Yeah - I know. Always the worry that people don't follow advise with appropriate safety measures.

This is the method we use on the big 4x4's. Loosen the studs then drive around the field until you hear the wheel wobble.

Sharp taps with a well covered lump hammer did mine, whichever method you use the key seems to be rotate the wheel a little between knocks.

I was going to say, please be real careful with it being on a jack or axle stand when you are mauling/giving it a wack

Loosen the bolts, jack the car so it's well supported and just off the ground, lie on your back with your legs toward the outside edge of the wheel place, the flats of your feet at the 3 and 9 o'clock position.

Now, alternating between feet, give sharp precise kicks to either side of the tyre, you'll feel it give once the surface corrosion parts from both sides.

I'd advise wearing soft soled shoes.

Never fails and (unless you're a complete clot and accidentally kick the side of your car) has ZERO risk of damage.

Is it okay if Andysat is the guinea pig? If all okay and not crushed then I will give it a try....
On a more serious note. Thanks for the advice. I will make sure both stands are under the car and I have some strategically located wood/bricks underneath just in case.

Hey thanks for the vote of confidence aquazi :) -used cj's advice, the way that worked for me was to loosen all five bolts then jack the car up and slowly lower it until it cracks the wheel free-cheers cj

+1 on the above. Used it just this weekend. Jack up the car, loosen all 5 bolts just a bit, lower slowly until fully down, then raise again. Stuck wheel comes right off when you remove al bolts.

Agree loosen bolts a couple of turns lower car and that usually works. For tough ones drive back and forward a couple of meetings. Saves all that kicking/whacking with mallet.
