Wheel refurb

I have a set of 108s that the previous owner had done in a two tone style...the spokes dark grey, and the outer rim in grey/silver.
But it appears to have been a sub standard job because when using some wheel cleaner, the wheels reacted badly, resulting in a white sticky, waxy residue that just will not come off.
I've asked two places for price to refurb them. One place quoted £650. Another turned the job down saying they've had difficulties putting the split rims back together.
So I'm looking at attempting a DIY refurb. Very minimal kerbing - it's very much a clean up job rather than a repair job.
Has anyone tried this before?
Any dos or don'ts?
hints or tips?

I've watched a few youtube videos but can't beat a conversation with someone who's done it.

Anyone done such a thing before?

I had 20" split rims on one of my Jags, I was driving down the motorway one night and I could hear a noise from the back of the car. Next morning I noticed that one of the back wheels looked slightly dirty and on closer inspection I notice that 3 bolts had gone on the wheel, lucky escape! It took me ages to find someone who could fix the wheel, eventually found a place in the centre of Glasgow but it wasn't cheap. Too much hassle, for that cost I'd consider another set of wheels.

Cheers....I've already replaced the wheels. I'm now running a set of 19inch wheels, similar to CSL.
The 108s are stacked in my garage.
Thankfully my brother in law is a mechanic and has tyre changing facilities so I can get the tyres off quite easily if needed.

But for a place to turn down the job, it's made me think it's going to have to be a DIY job, because if it costs £650 on a refurb, then it means they're basically worthless as they are

I have the same situation, running CSL rims and a stack of 108s in the garage and not sure what to do. I think a restored set of 108s looks perfect on the Coupes

I've found a local company who've quoted £220 to refurb. Added bonus is, they're mobile so will come to the house. Downside is, I'm at work, leaving the wife at home to deal with it....so hopefully it goes well.

I presume for £220 they are going to just fill any scrapes and spray over the current wheels without splitting etc, expect it to last a year at most before it starts peeling off again. But if thats all you need, then job is jobbed.

Wheels are currently stacked in my garage.
I may sell them once refurbed. Or I may keep them in storage until it's time to sell the car. At which time I'd refit them and they'd be effectively brand new.

EDIT : wheels are essentially mint condition apart from a bad reaction with cleaner. There are no kerb marks or scuffs. I just need someone with the skill and tools to properly clean them up and get them looking good. It's a clean up job, rather than a repair job.
