Wheel Change

When i changed the tyres for my M3 i could never get the tyre pressure warning light to go out, however long i tried to reset it. I am soon going to replace my Z4s 17" alloys with a set of 19s and none runflats. Am i likely to encounter this problem again ( its so annoying) and if so is there a solution?

You had run flats on your M3? No M cars have run flats thankfully. To avoid the warning light repeatedly coming on you have to carry out the correct reset procedure on the tyre pressure warning system which is very straightforward. I won't go through it here but I respectfully suggest that you RTFM.

Later E46 had Tyre Pressure warning system although they didnt have run flats, my 2005 320cd M Sport had it.

Lol, i just notice that i had put that ( got run flats on the brain). I followed the Reset sequence to the letter ( out of the manual ) and when that diddnt work i even tried driving at a steady 50 on the motorway for about 20miles with my finger on the button. The light went out then came back on within 2 mins!!!!

I can only think there was a problem with the system on your car, if it works on the Z4, you shouldnt have any issues with new rims and tyres as there are no sensors in the rims, it uses the ABS sensors (Differnet in USA where there is a sensor in 2007> cars IIRC)

It actually measures the rotation speed of the tyre and if it slightly deflates it alters the rolling radius thus the rotaion speed.

Just set all tyres to correct pressures, press button till orange light comes on, and then drive. It will go out.

If it comes back on red, then you have issues with the pressures, check them. If they are fine, then I'd look at the wheel speed sensors... though if they are at fault, usually, the light will come on orange, not red, indicating a fault.

What colour is the light coming on?

Sounds like you have a fault, or are still doing it wrong (20 mins held down on a highway isn't ever the right method, the manual method WILL work perfectly if you do it right or if you don't have a fault)

It actually measures the relative speed of rotation between all the wheels (left to right only , not front to rear IIRC) using the ABS sensor. It averages it out for turns and so takes a minute or so to set itself correctly. Of course once running any slight decrease in pressure will trigger a different relative rotation speed and an alert. It is also possible to trip it if you spin up the rears a lot.

Since your will not set and assuming the obvious of identical tyres, pressures, etc. then you have a fault in the system thta need fixing. possible the ABS sensor

LOL, guys you misunderstand me...i aint got a problem yet, i was just antisipating one when i go from 17s to 19s.

I had no problems at all when going from my 17's to 18's, can't see why there'd be problems with 19's assuming the pressures are set correctly. There's plenty of people running 19's on here. :)

Hunter,

Do you have an older Zed that uses 'rotational speed' like jeeper says or do you have the TPMS sensors in each wheel?

I dont even know what that means let alone if i got it!!! lol. Its an 04

Ship as per my ealier post we dont have the wheels with the sensors in, it uses the ABS sensors only. The sensors are for USA only.

Hunter - looping right back to your opening post you have the ABS type sensor as srhutch points out. Given the brief explanation I gave as to how the UK TPS works then it will make no difference what size wheel and tyre combos you fit to the TPS. Once fitted it may need to be reset once and that's it.

Dozens of people in the UK change wheel sizes from 17 to 18 and some 18 to 19 and have no probs.
