I know there has been discussion before on this subject, but for the benefit of anyone contemplating buying replacements, my experience may be helpfull.

I went to candccarparts on Ebay and bought four for £7.95 post paid.

Each centre is in its own plastic bag and has a film over the badge to be removed after fitting, the design of the plastic base is similar to the original BMW item but is slightly lighter. On the OEM badge the thin aluminium BMW colour motif is machine folded over the plastic base whereas the candccarparts have a similar thickness aluminium badge held on by 4 tags, which I tightened a little. Almost unbelievably these were made in Italy and not China.

They seem good quality and value to me and worth a try, of course I have no idea how long they will last, but on the face of it, appear not far short of being as good as the originals.

The tin plate with the fold over ears will corrode the first sign of salt and will lead to dissimilar metal corrosion in the centre of the wheel. Picture below shows an old set (top in bottom photo) i bought 3-4 years ago, they were sealed under hard plastic, only replaced due to heat fading.
The one's below was the nearest replacement of similar build quality.
Soon as you see on say Ebay the one's with ears folded, just avoid. The hard shelled plastic one's are only a couple of pounds more.

I bought some cheap centre caps from eBay and to be honest they were rubbish. Not only were they poor quality but they didn’t fit properly. I guess it just depends which seller you buy from and how lucky you are. In the end I decided it was a bit of a lottery and purchased OEM versions. They have been on for 10 months and are still perfect.

Interesting what you say about the plastic ones, no problem in my case with dissimilar metals, the originals on my car were thin aluminium sheet as are the replacements. Time will tell.
