Wheel bearings - heads up. 110,000 miles.

Just a quick post, my near side front wheel bearing gave up at 110,000 for anyone approaching that. £273 inc Vat to have replaced..

In the 3000 miles prior to that I was getting so,e feedback through the steering wheel that resulted in me getting the wheels balanced three times and a full laser alignment.. New bearings have deleted that and she's now running sweet as new. Especially with polly wishbone bushes.
 
Wheel bearings certainly don't come up as a regular replacement item on BMWs in general & in 3 years here i can't remember many (if any ) issues with them
The boots that seal them once split can be a cause of bearing breakdown but this should be spotted on a MOT
Think youve just been unlucky or possibly the side that needed replacement took a hard knock ?
Anyhow what was the breakdown of the £290 bill cause that seems steep :o

FEEDBACK. I spend 10 hours every weekend commuting on the motorway. Had a slight vibration through the steering wheel, if you've ridden a motorbike with race handlebars and trick suspension for a few hours.. It was like that. Causing a little numbness after a few hours.

DELETED. glad I've amused you with my poor use of English. I should have known that Deleted should only have been used in reference to written or printed text, maybe I should have covered my back by perhaps saying "that deleted my written description above" or something along those lines. I don't know..

PART FALIURE. looks like the fast right handlers at Snetterton were the kiss of death. It was fine until on the way home. After 40 minutes or so we hit some small ripples in the road on the a14 and it felt like I had a flat. Upon inspection the wheel had a few millimetres of sideways movement.

REPLACEMENT/COST. I had both the front bearings replaced complete with the hub assembly (excuse official part names) £152 for parts, £75 Labour + VAT to kick you in the face.

BMW main dealer, Coopers Colchester quoted in excess of £600, local Indi quoted upward of £360

REASON FOR POST. There's lot of low mileage drivers on the forum so not many hitting the miles to have a failure. Just thought I'd put it out there.. I might even give you a rare clutch replacement soon !!
 
I' we had one in 140,000 miles, but that was about 120,000 miles ago - and was caused when I hit a kerb.

Been on plenty of track day & ring trips since, and haven't needed another.

Don't know the price as it was replaced under warranty - despite me telling them how I'd done it :thumbsup:

:P no need to get twitchy :oops: in your OP you mentioned only your near side wheel bearing failing & then replacement cost of £290 which seemed expensive
At least your car is sweet again & i agree it is always good to share info on any mechanical issues that need attention :thumbsup:
