Wheel Bearing - BMW or Pattern part

About to book my car in to get a rear wheel bearing sorted... Garage was recommended to me by a mechanic at a dealer; It's the guy he did his apprenticeship under - 15 years bmw dealer experience, just set up his own garage - chuffed to have found him as my old Indy was crap... anyway, I digress

He asked me if I want a genuine BMW part, or a pattern. So the BMW part comes in at just under £60 with the collar nut. Say for argument's sake the pattern part comes in at half price (don't know for sure, can't find one on German & Swedish).

Is it worth the saving, or should I just stump the £60 for the genuine BMW part?
 
Pattern part seems the logical option BUT who is it made by? Many BMW parts are made by other manufacturers and then put into BMW boxes and the price doubled. If the pattern bearing is by a reputable manufacturer then go fot it - I would avoid those manufactured in China.

Who was the 'crap indy' so we can all avoid the place?

Well, 'crap' is maybe a bit strong... but it's Manor Garages in Altrincham; first time I took my old 3 series there (replace engine temp sensor - £400 :cry:), there was an air bubble in the coolant = overheated on way home (though guess it could have happened to anyone and he did stay late to sort it out). Then first MoT on my Zed, needed 2 new tyres; told me I couldn't put non-runflats on it as it would be illegal. Then with the wheel bearing, said he'd never done one, so "wouldn't know about that".

If part No.3 is correct, it looks a pretty standard bearing, I would be tempted to go to a local bearing supplier (BSF or something like that, it's been a while) and see what they have (probably SKF or INA) and at what price.

42X75X37 are the bearing measurements usually Internal Diameter, External Diameter and Width/Depth, it also tells you its a Radial Ball Bearing, that is everything you need to know to Iendtify the bearing.
If they start on about 2RS or RS its the no. of rubber seals on the bearing and SS will be Stainless seals, keeping the grease in place, but going back to the picture it shows no seals.

'Patent' parts would be ones that should not be copied without having a licensing agreement in place - but I've never heard any parts being called that.

'Pattern' parts are ones where a parts manufacturer has copied an original/OEM part.

Of course, you also have 'OEM' where a company that produces parts for a car maker uses the same tooling to make extra that they can sell through motor factors.
Sometimes these are made to exactly the same spec (including the same metal/plastic/material grade), but sometimes they're not. It's up to you to decide which and whether the saving is worth it.

For example, you can get a headlight for a e34 as a Chinese pattern part for £15, or a genuine BMW from the dealer for £130, or a OEM Hella one from a motor factor for £30 (this is identical to the BMW one except for missing the BMW roundel & part number - both the BMW & Hella one have the same Hella stamp & codes on).
 
So, have booked it in for the BMW part...
The pattern one they use is only £15 cheaper, so while it's reassuringly expensive enough to be a decent one, the extra bit of cash buys a bmw warranty on the bearing and peace of mind :thumbsup:
