What's up with my electrics?

Yesterday the car decided to reset both the clock and the 'trip' mileage by itself. Today the dashboard information screen and the cd/radio display both lit themselves up really brightly for a few seconds then went back to normal. Note the rest of the dash (dials etc) stayed at dim setting I prefer to keep it at, just the rectangle readout went bright.

Other than a rattle (suspected loose heat shield) the car has been running fine.

Any suggestions or has my car caught 'the mental' from my girlfriend?

Fairly sure it's the original from 2004 so getting on a bit. Will have to get that changed then. Annoying since i've just ordered a trickle charger for winter anyway!
