What is this grey pipe for?

My guess is a vent from the battery - but I can't see anywhere to plug it in. :?

Yep its a vent for the battery, one end should be plugged in to the batt and the other end should connect to the car to take any fumes away.

I'm guessing the battery has been replaced at some time, do you have a BMW battery?
