What's the difference between these induction kits/intakes?

The gruppeM is a much more widely recognised and reputable brand. I have the aFe intake, it's a much more snarly noise and will also put a smile on your face. Some will say that the GruppeM is worth the extra, but if I'm honest - I get just as many smiles per hour out of my aFe intake.

Both will sound glorious when under load and no different from stock when just cruising. That's why IK's are a much better bet then exhausts.

why not measure the intake pipe after the air sensor then buy a large enough filter from k+n or green etc, save a fortune. Like I did on an a4 turbo.

Filter was under £40 (2003) Measure the surface area of the standard filter, then match it to the cylinder filters length x diameter to find the correct size. Failing that sometimes the bhp rating will be mentioned.

Looks like it might, the Gruppe M is better as it takes its air from the same place as the oem airbox, it's just a bit more open.

At anything above about 15-20 mph I doubt very much if the intake of underbonnet air makes any detectable difference unless someone can prove otherwise?

Does this setup not take in alot of warm air from the engine??
forgot to post the second pic which has the airbox feed pipe connected to the black ducting at the top right. note the hand made heatshield.

+1. If you have cold air ducting the difference would be negligible in real life at speed vs a sealed cold air feed IMO. Perhaps on a rolling road test you would see power loss....

im suprised no-one has done what ess did for their stage 2 + s/c kits but for n/a cars.... ess re route the filter and its now mounted right upto the passenger side grill, its now mounted completely out of the engine bay and see's a stream of cool air, their is a small opening that allows this to happen without any modification to the car at all..... this is a true Cold air source...... the only problem is the filter gets completely covered in bugs in no time, i have to clean it upto 3 times per summer.....

See the curved intake running to the back of the s/c feeding the compressor side

you can see the k & N unit next to the headlight.... the filter is truely massive and fills that complete space, its very similar in size to the headlight unit.

Would this work with non M?

Would the intake run not a little too long on a NA engine though?

I've bought the aFe intake with RPI scoop. Nice!

Good post interesting to see that. A little too exposed for my liking mind.

Yeah it gets a real exposure..... Supercharger blades are perfect not even so much as a paint scratch on the impellar so that large k & n unit is working well...... Its also water repellant.... Aftermarket for the gtr is very similar.... It works really well, it makes alot of noise however, lots of whhhhooooosssshh...

I reckon it would if you could extend it properly, imagine how much air that unit sees at 70mph...

But it was 3 times the price! When I sell the car it will go back to standard so not too bothered if the metal casing looks a little tired. Might even make a new casing from stainless steel once I have the pattern from the old one.
