What's the big deal with DSP?

I'm looking for a fairly simple ipod solution but a lot of them say 'not with DSP'. What's the problem with connecting to a DSP system?

I came across the iSimple Soundbyte for sale at Bimmian - iSimple Soundbyte which connects using the cd autochange input. My changer is jammed & it's unlikely I would use it anyway (I'm planning to remove it when I replace the tilt sensor).

Any other solutions? I'm not really wanting to spend £250 on an Intravee. Track info on the nav screen is cool but I don't really swap song etc on the move so it's not a great benefit.

I've got the OEM BMW one installed, works with my iPhone 5 via an official adapter.

Limited functionality but I think it would meet your needs and maybe cheaper?? (I have DSP)

DSP is Digital Signal Processing. This means the amp is fed a digital signal from the head unit. Nearly all adapters work on analogue signals and cannot communicate digitally. A few adapters do have this capability, or offer an Digital/Analogue converter add-on module. Except for the basic Aux In cables, all adapters tie into the CD changer wiring, requiring any changer installed to be abandoned.

No big deal just convert to analogue with an adapter and anything will work as if you did not have DSP. I have one for sale here

So what's the OEM BMW interface & official adaptor?

GreyZed - I'll have a look tomorrow & see what my connections are.

Ok, I found the 'official' BMW ipod interface - 65.41.0.409.610 although apparently there's a 2nd gen version 65.11.0.409.342. They have basic functionality which would probably do me but it seems a right faff removing pins etc. I would rather have something plug & play. As I said, I'm happy to lose the cd changer.

I forgot to mention that as well as the Pro SatNav & Pro CD/DSP/Carver audio I also have Bluetooth.

The Denison iGateway & Gateway 300 look good but say not compatible with DSP (need GreyZed's adaptor) or HD's with a phone button.
