I'd get a second opinion from a mechanic who knows BMWs. Sounds like this guy is just guessing or doesn't like working on them.

If it’s the water pump it’ll be throwing up error codes, [ref]Jeverson28[/ref], have you had the car scanned yet? If not suggest that as your starting point.

It’s been a while since I’ve had a HG replaced but £2k seems VERY expensive if it’s just a gasket change with no other repair imo

Think its an M54 manual pump Andy- will that still throw codes?

Thought I'd post an update.

So I've had the thermostat and water pump and all the symptoms I was having have gone! Very happy with that. You guys were right, the head gasket was fine in the end. Good result all in all!

Therefore it will be up for sale very soon. Will be sad to see it go but don't have the space for it and have the E89 which suits me better right now with the loong commute
