whats happened to my tyres?

Can i just say, camber does NOT effect wearing on the inside or outside! Its Toe in or Toe out that does. FACT

And "google bridgestone runflat problem BMW" Or something as i said, loads like it, including myself a while ago.

Chris - Not sure about your 'FACT'. Toe in or out is the usual cause of excessive wear on the inner or outer edge of a tyre. Typically on the extreme inner or outer edge and usually quite roughgh. Negative camber wears out tyres in an even slope from inside edge to outer - that's one of the downsides of setting up street cars for fast track.

Yeah see your point, and yes to a degree. But what i meant is that wear like on Jamie's would not be camber related. As its the inner edge only and not spread across the whole tyre. But ive had negative camber and never had uneven tyre wear. But if you did 30k on a set then it may show. But thats a lot of straight driving :D

half of the tyre wear has been motorway driving as I drive 50 mile round trip to work five days a week. Was thinking the other day that I havent noiced the car tram lining for the last 9 months wondered whether this is due to the tread wear. Would be intersted in poping up to Lichfield would preffer a recomendation than just going to any old place, cheers Phil.

Phil - I think Rolf has an E89, this has happened before...

& Jamie.. are you really sure they've done 22k? That is pretty impressive regardless of anything else. There's actually a build date on all tyres I didnt know until recently from Tony's post here, I'd be interested to see what the dates were, even though it's not necessarily when they were fitted.

Yeh they have done 22 as bought it with 17000 miles on the clock and the tyres were new. Now on just under 40000. Dont drive quite aggressively as you from what I remember. :poke:

The front tyres on mine were the originals and still had around 5mm when i bought it on 27k. They lasted 35k in the end with around 3-4mm left, having to replace them due to drying out/cracking. This set arent lasting as long though :driving:

Front tyres on the Zed really aren't put under much stress at all; if you drive it correctly (or like a granny!)

Andy - that may well be true on the rears of an E89 (and I'm not convinced of that anyway as it sounds more like somethign a dealer makes up to get out of a difficult question), but this thread relates to the fronts on an E85 so it's unrelated.

Jamie- let me know exactly what rims and tyre sizes you're running and I'll get you a price. In any event you'll have to get the alignment checked at a specialist shop as tyre fitters don't generally the correct Hunter equipment.

Well I now have Falken 452’S. Had them fitted by First class Alloys in Lichfield in the end. Good job too, as the first wheel they pulled off had a crack in it which needed welding. :o Not quite sure how or when I did it, as the Run flat indicator only lit up on the drive there, which at the time I assumed was the slow puncture in the rear left. However no problem for Paul, said he could repair it no worries. So I went shopping for a few hours while the job was done. On return all was done, brilliant job! (No scratches or marks on the alloys) Could not believe the state the two front run flats were in. The two inner edges had the canvas coming through far worse than the pics above, will be keeping an eye on that in future. All I need to do now is get a compressor and some tyre weld as I don’t want a space saver wheel.
Thanks Phil for the recommendation, bit of a trek to Lichfield but was well worth it. I just think what would of happened if I had gone to a tyre shop with a cracked alloy.
Will be using Paul know doubt in the future probably for a wheel refurb too, had some cracking wheels there, pardon the pun.! :)

Wondered how you got on and glad to hear you got a great job done there.

Always worrying when you take a tyre off and then find a crack in the rim - makes you wonder if standard tyre shops would see it and of course when did it happen, how and 'what if' of driving on it...

Look forward to hearing how you find the Falkens

I had this when i got my Z4, I had to replace both front tyres. I went to a specialist nearby who perfomed a 4 wheel alignment for £75, the dealer takes £150.

I'll say again, it's useless performing wheel alignments on performance cars with 5+ year bushes (unless rose joints ofcourse). Get them and maybe the wishbones changed if you don't wanna waste your money on alignment :)

Rolf - I'm sorry but this just made me laugh out loud. Stowing 5lb of canvas and a bit of magnesium frame a few inches further back causing the inner edges of tyres to wear out  Overinflating the tyres by 10% All that will do is wear the centre strip out.

My post was talking about the retractable roof, not a rag top. The information was given to me by people far more knowledgeable about tires and wheels then you and I will ever be (the wear issue was pointed out to me by a tire shop manager and the extra 10 % pressure by my BMW maintenance manager that is in the business for over 30 years and was trained by BMW in Germany).

So you see it is no laughing matter at all, I hope people with 2009, 2010 and 2011 Z's take the matter seriously.

2.5 degree, chamber, wear on the inside are all facts on our cars.

Once the tire has worn on the inside your main tread is still good, no need to change the tire, just add 10% more air to take advantage of the good tread.

one more thing, do check your air pressure often, I find that I have to add 3 to 5 psi every Monday morning.

Rolf .... R, O, F, Laughing

Adding 3 to 5 psi every Monday morning, yoooooooooooo what? :? Thats not right.

Slightly off-topic, and I know that the run-flats are almost universally hated, BUT.......22,000 miles out your tyres, on a performance car, is pretty impressive ! :o

+1 I agree

Rolf - Not meaning to upset you but this thread was related to the front tyres on an E85 and without any reference to the contrary you posted about the rear tyres wear on an E89. That's why I dismissed the references to hood weight, over inflating tyres, etc. I claim no knowledge of E89's and you may well be right.

Sorry, my bad

Need to make sure I wear the right glasses :)
