What to do?!

not sure what the best would be...

We have two cars my DS3 and mrs gannet's Mazda 2 Sport which is approaching 3 years old with just 14k on the clock...

the Mazda is on a PCP finance scheme with a 4k balloon payment which we have ready to pay off. The problem is the mazda costs more than the DS3 in petrol to run - it's primary use is mrs gannet's commute which is about 3 miles in stop-start traffic but even on a cruise it aint great :o (Fuelly fuel records below)...

options:
1. Keep both and pay off the balloon
2. Pay off the balloon and sell mazda (makes life harder when we need two cars)
3. Pay off the balloon and trade the mazda for something more fuel efficient...

So which would you do and why? Also if option 3, what would you buy instead?

I would keep the Mazda you will need to spend more than 4k to buy anything good and economical... That extra money would go towards the crap mpg

I would agree here, getting something else will take a long time to pay back. If you do want to trade the Mazda, why pay the balloon - is it going to be worth much more than that as a trade-in?

Depends on you finance options with the PCP can you not trade the mazda and keep the balloon payment? just transfer it to the next car? That way it will be the same.

just been to Vauxhalls valuation site.. shows: £5475 - £5825 as a trade in average... so if we trade just under 6k as a deposit etc...

any other thoughts?

yes I think we can - can't look it up as we aren't at home at the mo.

you could trade and not pay the balloon and have just under 2 k deposit plus your savings, so 6k in total, you will probs need another maybe 6k on finance to get something economical? So that 6k is a big wedge of cash for the difference between 30 and 50 mpg, remember you will still have to pay for fuel in a new car.

if of course you just want a new car and fancy a change don't pay the balloon and use the equity (2k) as a deposit for a new car pcp or HP and keep the 4k for a rainy day or to pay off the next balloon

I'd sell the DS3, add the money from that to the £4k you were going to use to pay the balloon payment and buy another Z, then I would get Mrs gannet to cycle the 3 miles to work explaining that you are doing this because you love her so much and want her to live a long and healthy life.

Sorry I'm useless when it comes to these sorts of things, :D

+1

sell the DS3 :o not gonna happen, it's awesome :P

bluestreak - what would you buy?

TBH after some more thought, probably gonna stick with the status quo... put the money we currently pay on the finance towards my now 8% more train ticket and the crap fuel economy. Sucks because we bought the mazda on the back of their claims for the fuel economy of the 2

Because you're doing less than 5k per year in the Mazda, then even if it did 40mpg+ the difference would have only been an extra fiver a week or something so don't feel too bad about it.

I think keeping it for a wee while longer is the right thing to do
