What to do with an old car?

So we have an 2004 MkV Golf 2.0 FSI, with 135k on the clock that my wife has used for years and I have sunk stacks of time and effort into keeping going, and by in large been pretty good and still runs, but has niggles that will only get worse. Condition wise, it is reflective of a work horse / knock about, but by no means in good condition.

We recently picked up a 320i Touring as a family car and this year the Golf it has to go.

It's probably not worth more than £1k, and as it is a 2.0 the tax is getting worse each year, although it is ULEZ compliant.

We buy any car, Motorway etc. won't touch it due to age and mileage, and I don't know if I want to spend hours trying to flog it privately.

Any ideas on what to do with it? I don't want to pay someone £300 to take it away, as then I may as well tax it.

Scrap / sell seems to get me about £275.

Stick it on auto trader. Someone will give £500 and take it away. I usually just run my dailies into the ground and then scrap them though.

I'm surprised WBAC aren't interested. A few years ago my sister had a 2006 Mini Cooper with 100K miles, a blown head gasket and lacquer peel on virtually every panel but she got a couple of hundred quid from them for it which saved her the pain of dealing with private buyers.

Maybe they have too much stock like that at the moment so it might be worth trying again every couple of weeks.

I sold a low mileage but tatty 18 year old Mazda 323f as a cheap runner on Gumtree in 2014 without any grief so you could try that seeing as the advert is free!

Id stick it on ebay, no reserve auction, with an honest, detailed advert.

I once sold a 330ci with a blown engine for £500 on ebay... bloke turned up with a trailer and off it went to poland to be broken for parts.

ebay without question. I've sold a number of cars and motorbikes on ebay over the years.
£20 for a classified ad.
Well drafted advert to help reduce the muppet questions you would otherwise receive.

We were going to scrap my wifes 21 year old Polo TDI and they offered £198.
Mechanically it was superb and regularly serviced but the bodywork was getting tatty as was the interior. That and constant rear caliper binding issues.
Luckily a mate at work bought it for £250. We could have got more but I'm glad its still going as we had it over 8 years.

Thanks all, I’ll give ebay a go.

It’s a solid runner and I still actually prefer the 2.0 NA engine to the 2.0 Turbo in the 320, but we are 2 people and 4 cars is just silly.

That said I did sling the MTB in it this week without fear of ruining the interior.
