What petrol (or Gas for guy over the pond!) do you use?

I just use normal grade fuel... try to stay away from supermarkets and stick to BP and Shell, but never really use the "special" fuel.

Does it make much difference to performance and fuel economy?
 
I use premium grade (91 octane or better) or else the car pings under acceleration. As Enfield pointed out, ethanol mixes have been found to cause some problems with our cars. The premium grades have less ethanol (or none) than the regular grades of gasoline. :thumbsup:
 
I use 93 ontane. Once I accidentaly put 87 octane in and I did notice a difference in accelleration near the end of that tank. It felt like it took till the end of the next tank of 93 to get the full accelleration back. I put a 93 in with a 10% ethanol mix one time and it actually felt like it increased the performance a tad and I did get 30.1mpg off of that tank compared to the 28.6 that I normally average. But that mpg could have been influenced by so many other variables that I'm not convinced it was due to the ethanol. I had never heard that ethanol was known to have an adverse affect on our engines. Anyone have any more geek data or info about that? Or maybe a link to a site that has more details about ethanol in our engines?

I don't doubt that you heard your car ping, but I find this surprising in that the engine's computer will adjust the timing in accordance with the octane rating, thus eliminating chances for pining. From what I've read and what other have posted, using regualr gas will in no way harm the engine, but might somewhat reduce high end performance and gas mileage.
 
Maybe I should have been a little clearer.. hard acceleration. :D
I bought the car to drive hard, not dawdle about like a Sunday grandmother on the way home from church. :driving: :thumbsup:
 
On the Scottish trip, hollpe had regular (supermarket) fuel and the other M's had 98 Shell. We got about 50 miles more out of a tank driving exactly the same (same speed / same route)

My maths ain't that great... does that mean it was worth paying the extra to get more miles? (take away performance for a sec)
 
at 40 litres, that is about £2 more for a tank, which equals to about 2 litres of petrol.

Getting 50 miles out of 2 litres would be nice ... so yes, it is worth it
 
What's a tank cost on your poxy little island Jim? Where I'm at it's currently $42 or £21.

I hate it when fellow Americans bitch about the cost of gas. Though the ones you find that complain the most are the least traveled. They have no idea how papered we are and how thoroughly raped the rest of the world is when it comes to the cost of petrol.

>£45 ish at the moment.... can't be sure because I close my eyes when filling up, then just hand my card to the nice lady in the garage... can't bear to watch the numbers going up.. and up... and up! :(
 
My weekly X5 fill is GBP 92 now ...

The Vpower is now 1.06 a litre which is about $2.12
 
I've always heard Chevron with Techron was the best. I wish Sunoco still carried 94 I'd get that. I usually fill up with BP 93 or Chevron 93. But in the Chevron that's closest to me, they smoke in the store... :sick: . I always leave with that smell in my clothes because there's no fresh air circulating and the layers just linger around so I try to avoid it.
