What on earth can replace my beloved 3.0si Z4 coupe?

Hey all,

I've had my amazing 2008 ruby red tinted, black 3.0si Z4 coupe for 4.5 years now, and she's racked up a lovely 95,000 miles. She's a delight, but I'm going to be doing more long journeys, and I don't want to just add silly amounts of miles onto her. The time has come to very sadly, get a new car.

Life has also meant that a two seater no longer fits the bill.

But I ADORE driving my Z4, and I very much want something that can be close to as much fun.

I've been looking at mercedes A45's, CLA's, range rover evoques... Aiming for £25k max

Does any one have any suggestions of something that will be loads of fun, is essentially my Z4 but with 4 seats and a quarter of the amount of miles... Does that even exist?? All thoughts and suggestions seriously welcome!

Thanks in advance,

RD

BMW M140 or M135I..................very fast cars which are practical and don't cost the earth to run.

Scirocco R. Golf R. Audi TTS (may be adding 3k to the budget). GT86. New Hyundia i30N looks fun if you aren't a badge snob.

Ford Focus ST??

There must be loads of BM's in the 4 seat and fun catagory. I would keep away from Mercedes.

Hi. welcome to the forum but its a bit odd that you've joined us just to ask us what you should buy instead of the Z4 :? - most people come here before they get a Zed or because they have one - or was it more about passing yours on?

Keep the Z4 as a 2nd car, and get a 3 year old BMW for the daily.

No need to spend £25k on a new car that you’re simply going to pile miles on.

My 2nd car preference would be a 640d (although most definitely not a chuckable), but one of the more powerful M-Sport 1/2/3/4 series should suffice (diesel or petrol).

Keep the Zed and buy a cheaper 'other car' to rack the miles onto.
Thats what I do. I have a 10 yr old Mercedes CLK, its comfortable and perfect for ferrying the kids about and doing the family donkey work. even if its not that much fun to drive.

and I have the Zed just for me. :)

Great responses. Thanks very much all.

Crazy Harry; I tick the second box you mentioned, I currently own a Z4. I imagined that I would find a group of like minded Z4 owners on this group who would be helpful and welcoming, and be able to offer comparisons of similar style drives because you can understand how the Z4 handles. As you'll see, I haven't mentioned about selling it as I didn't come on here to do that, just ask for friendly advice.

For £25,000 I would recommend the following:

BMW E9X M3 Comp Pack
BMW 850CSi (bit of a long shot but a bad boy car nevertheless, can keep up with today’s cars [circa 400bhp] and will only go up in value)
BMW M135i LCI
BMW 235i
Older but low mileage Porsche 911
Newish Porsche Cayman
Audi TTRS
Audi RS3
Mercedes C63
Golf R

There’s more but those are some ideas.

P.s. not all of those cars cost £25,000, many are less and thus you would have spare cash for mods, holidays or that new 4K TV!

As above if you have 25k to spend you could easily buy something a lot cheaper and use the left over cash to fund running 2 cars as for the RR Evoque I cannot imagine that would be a fun car to drive nothing like a Z.

Im sure you could get them down to your price, a nice 4 door

Or 4 seat but 2 door roof be gone one :)

To the OP - a second car is the real option here. Slippery slope though as I ended up with 4 second cars this way

If I was looking to just have 1 car and racking up miles I would be looking 430d or 435d. I test drove a 435d x drive and they are hugely fast and very tail happy

As mentioned by others - surely its a second car question really? You're never going to replace the feel of a 2 seater Z4 where you're sitting low down over the rear wheels with a straight six singing to you :driving:

Hope you find the right balance and can keep the Zed

I was thinking recently what would I get instead of my Z4 if I needed 4 seats, probably either an Audi RS4 or a 996 Carerra 4, or maybe even a TTRS, all around £25k, none of those would be as much fun as my Z4 IMO and don't have the rare factor either.
I plan to get something, probably a MK2 Audi S3 as a fun daily and keep the Z4.

I knew when I bought a Z4C that it was never going to do everything I need a car to do.

So I've got a 325i Touring for the mundane stuff! :)

I'm firmly in the "keep the Z4C and buy a daily" camp!

Considering you can pick up a daily for buttons, it's defo the way to go.

OP may want to be spoiled most days though. I roll around in a C Class estate most of the day and to be fair, it is pretty boring. If work would let me use the Zed or the Cayman then every working day would be a happy day.... :D

The Scirocco R is a good call from "Havard" , rarity value is high , build quality is high & performance is a real surprise with the intelligent front diff . they also take very well to modding & can easily produce 320-330bhp :driving:
Ive had the pleasure of doing a euro trip in one & Id happily take one over many of the above suggestions

If it's Z4 handling with 4 seats, then maybe the an e46 M3 CS (not my postcode) would fit the bill?

Although it may end up replacing your Z4 as your weekend car :P
