What next?

I'm thoroughly enjoying Z ownership and while I'm doing a few bits (hid kit, parrot, spacers etc) I always like to keep an eye on car prices and think ' what next' - so that's my question...

Here's my thoughts so far:

E46 M3 (definitely manual, ideally a CS)
996 (manual, ideally C4S)
630 / 645 cab
E60 M5
B7 RS4
VXR (6 litre / 4 door version 07>)

What do you think? Am I missing something obvious?

I'm planning to keep the Z until the middle of next year but we all have to have a plan :-).

Cayman S?

That's what I've been looking at, or if I've my more sensible shoes on then possibly a 635d.

Or an Exige if my sensible shoes have come off altogether.

Out of that list I would have an RS4 in sprint blue with buckets, swap the potentially problematic DRC suspension for a set of coilovers and enjoy the V8 loveliness

I would ditch the 996 for the 997. Prices are getting good for an early version.

Definitely - worth it for the improved interior alone! Can't believe how much you can pick a 997 up for nowadays.

That list looks like it covers quite a wide price range. What imaginary budget are we playing with here?

Theres good reason why they're cheap, as a porsche specialist said to me and my dad a few years ago when asked his opinion on 996 and 997 vintage cars and his words were "fantastic cars, just keep at least 6 grand to one side if you buy one . . .

I wouldnt touch one with a barge pole without a warrenty that 100% covers everything, RMS, IMS, cylinder bore scoring etc, yes they dont ALL fail but if it does and youve no warrenty, its gonna cost a pretty penny!

so right benny on 911 watercooled cars . i came away unscathed after my 18months porscheing & luckily around £1500 up in total .
no hurry to go back as the "wallet roulette" does play on your mind :)
as for the choices given by OP ?
6 series all the way whatever engine / 650i preferably but i doubt any would disappoint . got my wallet singed a little with my 645 having too many mechanical failures for my liking so it went & now i,m a happy Zedder

The budget would be £16k - £18k and to be honest my preference changes on a daily basis - I've always loved E46 M3s - more so than the later V8 and especially in manual CS guise.

The 996 appeals, well because I couldn't stretch to a 997 which are still low £20s, and that the C4S is supposed to be immense. (With regard to RMS failures I thought that most cars that were likely to have this would have had it by now? Any different experiences?)

RS4 would be fantastic, especially as a mugello blue avant but there's always time for those when you have kids (same with the M5 and the VXR8).

Cayman is nice but I'd always wish I bought a 997 and I'm not a big fan of the styling.

6 series is an option but there are lots of stories about electrical gremlins.

Car buying is never easy...! Surely I'm missing something? What else should I be thinking of?

the 6 series as far as i,m aware ( wish i'd known before i bought my 2005 ) is very prone to gremlins pre facelift of 2007
great V8 noise & performance with all the gadgets
