What laptop??

Bit of advice please chaps.
But first a request. keep it simple please
When it comes to PC's and the such, I know how to drive it, but dont ask me how it works.
Words like Ram and giga bytes and other such techy terms are completely lost on me.
So with that in mind here is my question.

I want / need a new PC as my existing one is begining to get an attitude, and the DVD writer thingy is goosed, so have decided to get a laptop and get rid of the big noisy processor thing altogether, so I want a laptop that i can internet browse with and basically do all the things I can do with my normal one such as burn CD and DVD etc, I have a budget of £500, if it was you what one would you buy.

I just got a 2nd hand Mac Book for £400. Best lap top I have ever had! It is true what they say......
Purchasing an iMac next week too for the photography business.
 
Normally PC World is the last place I'd recommend (well - unless you don't take advice from the staff In my Experience!) but it's a good place to go and have a look and get a feel for them. You might see one that looks a good deal online but don't really appreciate it might be a bit of a behemoth to hold due to size/weight. See what's in PC World, pick one you thinks a good deal then spend 30 minutes with google and the model name/number and see if there's better deals to be had.
Have a quick look as well to see if there's a review that comments on temperature. Laptops are all fine and good until they're so friggin hot that you can't sit them on your lap.
 
Tesco have done decent budget laptops on the shelf in the bigger stores, mostly Dell I think. Worth a look.

Typing this on phone as internet connection to house is goosed!
 
The budget is too much for your requirements. I have just bought a Sony Vaio from John Lewis for £450. It has 2 years warranty. It is a E-Series with AMD Dual Core processor, 3GB memory, 500GB hard drive, and ATI Radeon Graphics. If you only need it for internet and other simple tasks, e.g. MS Office, etc. a good brand laptop like Toshiba/Sony/HP with 2GB and 250GB is about £350. I play online gaming on my laptop, so I need at least 3GB memory and better graphic. Few retailers offer 2 years warranty, e.g. John Lewis, Tesco.

Yep good advice, I do that with most items. Shops are good showrooms before you buy on the Internet.
