Interesting car history toplad, what order did you own the porkas in? And what are thoughts going from the Cayman to M Coupe?
in order
S2000 (2003)
TVR Tamora(2004)
911(2005)
Cayman S(2006)
Boxster S(2007)
Z4M Coupe(2008)
I’ve had a few Porsches, but I wasn’t a Porsche fan before I bought my first one, a 911. My wife hated the TVR and wanted to change it, so I went to my local Porsche dealer to have a casual look at the Boxster, but I’d driven one before and wasn’t that impressed. Also looked at the 911 and wasn’t that impressed with that either, it felt dull slow and very normal on the test drive compared to my TVR, my wife persuaded me to get the 911, I thought I’d give it a fair crack of the whip to see if I was missing something on the test drive. Turns out, I was.
Choose a C2 manual and went to collect a few days later, absolutely screwed it to death on the journey home in the driving rain, I’d only had a for 10 minutes, but the feel through the steering and general connection allows you to drive it with confidence, loved Porsche’s ever since.
The Boxster was just an in between-er until I decided what I was going to get after doing up the house.
Comparing the CaymanS and Z4M coupe, I’d say the Cayman rides much better and is easier to drive, you can use it just like a normal car, the chassis is brilliant, but it lacks a bit of character compared to the Z4M, maybe because it so polished.
The engine in the Z4 M feels stronger, I found the Cayman S nearly as fast but you’ve got to screw it a lot more than the S54 engine. The Cayman drives itself too, you really have to drive the Z4 every inch of the road and the clutch and gear box aren’t as smooth or as easy to operate(yes, I’ve done the CDV), which makes smooth progress harder work in traffic. Think the ECS software would benefit the car greatly. I bought the car as a toy though and overall I prefer the Z4M coupe, it’s just more fun. I love the way you can head into a sweeping bend with the front tyres load up, then turn in a bit more and feel the back end start to come round under power on the exit. I had the chance to buy a Cayman S before I bought the Z4 for very similar money and choose the Beemer.
A good question to ask yourself is, how many great drives have you had in the car?
I’ve had loads in the Z4, I love driving it, it makes me grin every time I take it out, the Cayman was a better all rounder and probably just as fast in the real world, but it didn’t put a smile on my face half as much.
