What is the purpose of this plastic tank?

ECU housing I believe!

that's where all the wiring ends up from your interior it's a sealed "tank" to prevent water ingress.

LOL when I went to view my 1st Z4 I was clawing away at this to check the level of whatever it was inside. Thought it was empty and the owner was none the wiser either.

Further to conversations on my water pump thread, I happen to have the lid off mine at the moment. Not the best photo but gives you an idea of the mess of wires and ECU in there.

i thought this held some sort of liquid too until i ended up giving in and unscrewing top to see what was in there :roll: something else learnt i suppose

When I bought my car some german bmw tech thought it would be handy to store some tools as he forgot his pocket light in that box when I opened it up after I got the car for some mods
