What is the meaning of "facelift"?

Please excuse my ignorance since I am new to this board and to the Z4. I keep seeing references to "facelift" cars. Exactly what does that mean? :?

The Z4 was introduced in the US late in 2002 as a 2003 model and continued until 2005. In 2006 there were some major changes in both engines and front and rear end treatments. The 2006 to 2008 models are referred to as the "Facelift Models. The ///M version was also added with the 2006 model year and the coupe as well. The current version starting in 2009 had a different body and is referred to as the E89 version.

The internal term for facelift is CLI, Consumer Lifecycle Incentive. BMW marketing speak for tarting up an ageing model because we're not ready to spend money yet on introducing a proper generational refresh.
