What does the exhaust flap do?

Rubbish pic but just wandered what the flap does on the inboard tailpipe? it sits about 2" or so inside the tip, theres a connecting rod that attached to the top of the exhaust and you can see the bottom connection on the underside of the tip,



Is this purely for sound generation?

It is a sound reduction measure at start up but if you have a read about the "GolfT mod" on here Tim, all will be explained :P
 
I though golf tee mod was for 35i/35is only. I have it on my car and would never go back to stock, It does make the car loud, especially so on a cold start in a garage its a bit overkill.

I think you will still have a slight handicap but the T might help you drive a bit further .....
