What Can Cause Vanos Fault Code

I have read the solenoids are interchangeable and when I swapped them last time the car drove perfectly fine until the fault code came back again

What would you say are the list of things I should try ?

The fault code came back on the same side? Exhaust or inlet? Or moved with the change of unit?

I don’t know if you can swap intake / exhaust Vanos units around ..

If you look at this fault code amongst N54 on other cars then oil pressure / quality are indicators of this behaviour…

So anything that improves oil pressure / quality is something to try..

Often these faults boil down to marginal issues where some cars suffer and others don’t ..

So then for oil pressure definitely check the filter cage is secure and has all the seals fitted.

I’ve used MHD fault checks which shows the same code as another diagnostics tool I have, I’ll swap the Vanos round and if the code swaps again I’ll return them

When you get into the weeds you need either a proper tool like Bimmergeeks Protool or even BMWs ISTA to bottom these class of faults out.l
