What are these for?

I was looking under the bonnet this evening and noticed these two items which look rather like gas strut mounting balls... but I can see no purpose for them. Any ideas?

Alternate mounting points for the gas struts to hold the bonnet up.
Later models had them in a different place.

My car gas struts are mounted on the earlier pivot points, work fine, i wonder why they changed the position.
The windshield jet pipe is all floppy in that pic. on my car they are tidily attached to the strut.

Is this a 23i?
What is the black roundish thing in front of the suspension tower?

I have the same thing on my 35i. Charcoal canister?

Does make you wonder why they changed it. Does your earlier car have the mounting points for the later position?

Maybe the earlier mounting points interfered with the operation of the pedestrian active protection system?

Have a look at Robbi's pic - there are no mounting points for the alternative strut position.
