What are "brake shafts"?

Just reading the maintenance summarry in my service book that my dealer follows errr I mean supposed to follow, I see that it says "clean the brake shafts"

What are brake shafts?

Also, how do you measure brake pad thickness with a feeler guage?

not sure what brake shafts are, but you wouldnt check brake bads with feeler gauges, they are used for seing how big gaps are.

Bads can be done by eye, and disks by vernier or micrometer

Brake shafts could mean the caliper sliders?!?

Pads and disk are done by eye, you want a couple mm of pad left and run your finger across the disk to make sure theres no groves or a lip on the edge, obvisouly do this before they get hot.

It's just a little disturbing that a BMW technical document refers to checking pads by feeler guage - this is crazy, check by eye, by vernier but not by feeler guage.

Yes, I can see that brake shafts could mean the pad guide pins and I guess they should be cleaned.

If I'm understanding what the pad plate is (the backing plate that the friction material is bonded to on the pad), then that would be mesured in mm, not the distance that you would measure the with a feeler guage.

If somebody tied to measure the distance between the disc and the backing plate with feeler gauges I would take my car to another garage. Mind you I have no intention of letting any garage change my brakes when it comes to it.

My thoughts exactly. How do we determine what BMW dealers are doing to our cars when the procedures detailed in the service book don't make sense.
