Wet sand Mineral White paint (or pearlescent paints)

Hi guys!

I've got a minor scratch which I believe didn't go deeper than the clear coat. I'm thinking of wet sanding it very carefully to remove it. I've got a Mineral White e89, which is a pearlescent paint.

However, I've read that you shouldn't wet sand pearlescent paints since you could remove the pearls and therefore the sanded area will be noticed (different pearlescent finish than the other areas).

Is this true? As far as I know, these finishes have 3 paint layers - first the base color (white in my case), then a pearlescent paint layer and then a clear cloat layer. If the scartch reaches only the outer layer (clear coat) I should be able to wet sand it without damaging my pearlescent finish, right?

Personally I wouldn't attempt it. If its just the clear top coat worth getting one of the 'scratch' repairers to have a look - better to spend £60 and get it right than end up with a patch in the paintwork. :(

I will be using grit 2500 to wet sand the scratch. Do you think Menzerna's PF2500 will remove the sand marks?

Personally I'd either leave it altogether; or try a machine polish. If that fails I'd leave it to the experts rather than resort to wet papers. If you mess this up it's a whole panel.
 
i tried 2000 grit wet and dry to sand out some scratches in my clearcoat, had a lot of trouble even with a mop and 3m fast cut to get the sanding marks out , that clear is so hard . you would think that a mop and air polisher would get them out easily, we used to wet flat with 1200 and have no problems at all. just modern hard finishes i guess :wink:
 
I've successfully wet sanded problems on daily runners but TBH would $hit myself doing this on a late E89 with Pearl paint! I'm thinking that if you need to be asking questions you need to practice and experiment first and your lovely car ain't no place to practice on IMHO. A few quid for an expert can be money well spent.
